Oh hey!

I haven't been here in months because I got a new job and with it a new laptop. I went to the dark side and now I'm a field service tech for Rivian.

Anywho, Happy New Year and all that jazz

Congrats on your new position.
What's it like with Rivian - are they more traditional than Testicle? By that, I mean do they have Stealership buildings with service departments, or do they send you out to work with their customers and there is some arrangement with local Stealerships to use their service departments for anything that can't be fixed in the field?

What equipment do you carry around with you - a multimeter and a sack of electrons?

Speaking of Testicle, I heard that they have a lot of chassis issues that can't be fixed with a software download. Can you believe that? Speculation is that their vehicles grew heavier as battery packs got bigger to add range and their suspensions, brakes, etc. aren't up to the task anymore.

We don't have dealerships. Work is done at a growing number of service centers or, in some situations, as mobile work

Are you involved with the commercial vans, too, or just the Pick-m-Up and SUV?

I've done a little bit of van (EDV) work, but my responsibility is technically just with the truck and SUV (R1)

I was wondering if the commercial van users were responsible for servicing their own fleets.

While Many are Called, Fuses are Chosen

FORVIA REPLACES FUSE BOX WITH ELECTRONIC CONTROLS - Autoline Daily
Automakers are working on new ways to simplify their electric and electronic architectures in cars. Whether it’s zonal computing, edge computing, 48 volts, or Ethernet connections, they’re all working on it. Now Forvia has come up with a way of eliminating the fuse box in a vehicle and replacing it with electronic controls. Ben Cohen, the VP of Strategy, Sales and Marketing, told us what it’s all about.

I dunno...I kinda like the idea of a dumb ol' fuse watrching over my circuits. It's unlikely to get misdirected after a software update.

Sounds like a solution looking for a problem to me. I, too, have an appreciation for robust independent control mechanisms (like a clutch that can mechanically decouple the engine regardless of what the computer is doing). I can't imagine an electronic fuse would be more reliable than a traditional fuse (nor life-cycle cheaper unless you're working on Audis that bury the fuse block under layers of componentry, which is not a problem with the concept of fuses).

When the alternaotor shorted on my '85 Omni GLH Turbo, I blew a fusible link.

About 5 years ago my sister gifted me with a window defroster that plugs into the cigarette lighter plug...I stored it out in the cold and it blew the 10 amp fuse when I plugged it in. ...as if 120 watts was going to deice my windows anytime before the spring thaw came.

What was it you were saying about a solution looking for a problem? Yeah, I've got no problem with fuses.

SIGH

JAGUAR ENDING ICE PRODUCTION IN JUNE Autoline Daily
Despite a slowdown in demand, Jaguar has put all its eggs in the EV basket and it looks like there’s no turning back now. The automaker is making the transition to an all-electric lineup and production of its gas- and diesel-powered vehicles ends in June. That first EV won’t be out until 2025, but JLR needs to start converting its plants now to make electrics, so it’s hoping to build up enough inventory so it has enough vehicles to give to dealers before that EV launches. That all-electric model is said to be a 4-door sedan with more power than any previous Jaguar, 430 miles or 700 kilometers of range and pricing around 100,000 pounds.

Are you still "Stickin' it to the man"?

I've wondered what my options will be if something were to happen to my Jeep. Maybe I should make a pre-emptive strike and buy something now....or, if/when the day comes to pass, buy a Specifica so I can haul the Grandsons around.

"Look, Grandpa's car still has a steering wheel!"
