I guess you're right. I picked a random mid-range computer (599 euros, no monitor) and nearly equivalent components separately (714 euros) so I guess it's the same here. Still, I'd rather get the latter - at least I'd know what my computer has eaten.
theholycow wrote:If you have lots of old parts that are still good then it could work, but at what point do you say you're building a new computer vs. upgrading an old one?
I'd say a computer becomes new when you upgrade the major components around which the rest of the 'puter is built, i.e. motherboard and CPU. The rest is just upgrading.

3D CAD and HD video processing to mention a few. I also prefer the ergonomics, quietness and superior sound quality of a well-built desktop computer with good components. The black aluminium case also looks neat next to my black amplifier, black speakers, black Eizo monitor, black mouse, black keyboard, black'n'twisted soul...

I don't think I'd want my pr0n to have too good resolution...it helps not seeing too much detail, especially with the kind I watch.

To me, if you have the same case, video card, HD, OS, peripherals, and you've just installed a new motherboard/CPU/RAM then that's an upgrade. Definitely if you've only upgraded the CPU it's just an upgrade. It's most of the same stuff, you're using it the same way, and after a few new drivers you're back to using the same old computer.

I'm witnessing the slowest car chase ever...in the middle of the quad at school. A mustang is just driving around in circles as the campus police follows it with its police lights flashing. All at about 5 mph

Doesn't everyone? I told my friend about that car and now he's borderline obsessed with it and he doesn't even like cars really.

We've gotten more snow this afternoon than we did during the recent 2-day 'blizzard'.

Congratulations!

I had a good day as well. I gave in and bought a Gamecube, the Resident Evil remake, AND a King Diamond CD.
Now, go buy all the Bond games for it. You won't regret that decision. Srsly...

I hate laptops. Always have, always will. Not gonna drop a desktop and break it. Not gonna move my desktop around much at all. Likelihood of overheat? Not much. Easier to work on than most laptops? Hell yes. Oh, and last time I checked (not too far back) Laptops STILL suck for games compared to desktops of equivalent age.

I have no interest in buying a manufactured computer, either. A. Newegg is a great place to buy decent shit on the cheap. B. I've spent most of my life dealing with OEM, and I've realized the fact that I hate OEM. Custom rigs are just easier. C. With a custom rig, I'm not limited by the choices a manufacturer gives me. e.g. "Which one of these three choices for RAM would you like?" I'm limited by "What's the most powerful mother I can throw on the board? Okay, out of that range what do I want?"

Waiting on one more W2 before I can start my tax party. Wish I could start now.

I just put a copy of Forza 3 up for sale on ebay. Man, that game is worth nothing.

Any kind of video or rendering software or gamez are a good reason for a fast computer. I can see that.

And I love laptops. I still have a desktop, but it's just too much commitment for me to sit at a desk while being on computer. I lay on couch, watch tv, and just hang out and check computer every once in a bit. I was always antilaptop until I got one. Now, they are cheap enough for even me to purchase. I will never upgrade it, honestly. If it breaks severely, I'll be bummed, but I've gotten my money's worth out of it already.

I may be moving into a new place in April. A place with a garage. 8) 8) 8) 8)

We have a family heirloom - George Washington's hatchet Yes, the famous one that chopped down his father's cherry tree and that he admitted to doing the deed with. That hatchet. Thing is, it's a couple centuries old by now, and we don't just let it sit in a display case - we still use it to split firewood, chase each other around the house with, etc. Over time, we've had to replace the handle 7x and the head 4x, but it's still George Washington's hatchet, because the wedge is original.

I borrowed a power ice auger and auged about 100 holes in an area lake this morning. Something like 650 people - Cub scouts and their families, were coming ice fishing. There were a couple other volunteer augers and some of the dads bought power or armstrong augers. I was so wet, tired, deaf, etc. that I took it easy and fished in one of the blue ice shanties that they had set up on shore. All I caught were a couple of crappies.

Is it sad that today is the first time I watched the SLR and boat to Oslo race?
