Driving with A/C
Driving with A/C
Just noticed today that having A/C on really requires you to mash the gas harder vs regular driving. I've been doing rev matched downshifts and noticed that i have to blip harder with a/c on .
The same blip with a/c on only gives me 2/3 or 3/4 regular rpms with a/c off.
Anyone else noticed the same thing?

I've noticed the same thing. I need to give more gas to get going or climb a hill.
When the engine's idling and I switch the AC on, the tach needle slightly "dips" down for a second. When I switch it off, the needle jumps up a bit.

Re: Driving with A/C
In addition to the power usage, A/C causes DFCO behavior to be less aggressive on my car, with A/C on it only holds DFCO down to 1250rpm vs. 990 with A/C off.

Re: Driving with A/C
Not only does it take more of a stab to rev-match, it also makes the revs fall faster. This means you must either shift faster, or give it more gas to catch the revs as they fall to compensate for what the A/C is sucking out of your engine.

Re: Driving with A/C
The brick wall is why I almost never use AC. Its great for those few days when I dont feel like sucking it up, but the power and economy drain on the engine usually isnt worth it.

I care a lot about gas mileage, but...if there's one thing worse than spending $50 to get there, it's getting there in sweat-soaked clothes (and I'm one sweaty mofo).

Re: Driving with A/C
hmmm aircon, doesn't really affect my car that much but i can feel the diff.... those people with big 8+ cylinder cars prolly wonder why we complain about air con stealing lots of power, they wouldn't notice a thing prolly.

Re: Driving with A/C
I like A/C. Happy to pay the gas-setback to operate it.
