Went off the road for the first time last Nov.

Post by ClutchDisc »

Hey guys, been really busy with work and school. On Nov 22nd I was driving into work in the early morning, left extra early and was going pretty slow because freezing rain had just started. Well I'm doing 30 mph on the hwy, (roads weren't too bad yet) and come up on a curve... road right there was a total sheet of ice. (must have been raining longer right there!) I lost control and I immediately knew I was going off the road.... I came to a stop almost hanging over a 8 to 10 foot drop off into the river. I was only 1 foot from going over and rolling the S-10. The trees and brush saved me and the S-10. While I waited for the tow truck, cars were sliding and crashing around me... a lot of bad pile-ups right by me.

I came out fine, the S-10 came out pretty good, the plastic piece under the front bumper cracked, but other than that, and needing an alignment, the truck is great.

I was really blessed that day to go off the road when and where I did, or I could have been in one of the really bad accidents.

It's hard to see, but the red line in the first picture is the drop off into the river.

And here I thought this thread was going to be about offroad driving.

I'll be testing my Jeep's 4wd system soon with a trip up to the winter cabin...on a snow-covered trail. Should be fun and I certainly hope it's as good as my old 4Runner. The tires on the Jeep might not be up to the task though.

I remembered when I used to wheel my Xterra, there was a time when I got into a precarious situation. We were driving across this small ridge, with significant drop offs on each side. The ridge was narrow and muddy. During a climb, I lost traction and started to skid backwards and to the side. The truck was leaning heavily and the group I was with was using recovery straps, attached to my rock sliders on the high side and to their trucks down below to stop me from rolling off.

I tell ya, my butt bit off a huge chunk of the seat on that day. I miss wheelin'.

Ice may be nice, but liquor is quicker!

Glad you're okay man. Reminds me of when I went offroading in the old Maxima. Went off the road and over some disintegrated stone wall (picture it no longer looking like a stone wall). was on my way to work. should've gone a different way; no matter how slow i was going, i was going to lose control on that road due to no traction due to no salt and being a downhill and curved road. called the boss and the first thing she asked was when i was gonna be to work. should've been my first clue (or one of the first) of just how bad a manager she would turn out to be.

Yeah...By the time "offroad" was an appropriate term, "driving" was a generous one. :)
