Saab 9-3 production halted due to lack of funds
NEVS in Sweden idles Trollhättan plant for a month due to a cash crunch
Production of the Saab 9-3 had resumed last year after the purchase of the assembly line and model by NEVS
Quingbo maintains a 22-percent stake in NEVS and currently has 200 electric Saabs on order for the city of Quingdao, where it is based. The electric version of the 9-3 is still in the works, and China is set to be the largest market for the yet-unbuilt model. Gasoline-powered Saab 9-3s with 2.0-liter turbocharged fours making 220 hp, a 20-hp boost over the pre-bankruptcy model, have been trickling out of the Trollhättan factory. Most of the production is going to China as well, but the cars can be purchased in Sweden for the home market via the Internet.
NEVS hopes to develop new models alongside potential partners; the 9-3 that is (or was) currently in production dates back a decade.

That thing looks amazing...well the wheels are way too big with too little rubber. I would like it to have a slightly more vertical windshield just to make it more like a Saab. But still those things would have sold, too bad they focused so much on making boring cars that look like meh.Rope-Pusher wrote:..."It might have been!"

We'll teach them for not buying our cars. We'll come out with some gorgeous concepts and then go out of business.

SAAB ON LIFE SUPPORT - From Autoline Daily:
And then there’s are the lows…in this case the ongoing funk for the folks at SAAB. The Wall Street Journal reports that the company that brought the iconic Swedish brand out of bankruptcy just two years ago, has filed for bankruptcy protection itself. The company — National Electric Vehicle Sweden or NEVS as it’s called — which had been producing about half-a-dozen SAAB 9-3 sedans a day, ran out of money to pay suppliers two weeks ago. So the Chinese-backed company that runs NEVS made the move to buy time for talks with potential investors. If this sounds familiar think back to about 3 years ago when Spyker and SAAB did this same sad dance.

Re: For All Sad Words Of Tongue And Pen, The Saddest Are The
We are gathered here today to pay our respects to Saab.
The deceased Swedish automaker’s lasting legacy is not the unconventional place it put the ignition switch. It isn’t the blackout feature that allowed the driver to turn off all the instrument lights except the speedometer, nor is it the clamshell hood or any other quirky Saab feature.
Saab’s contribution to automotive history is the hottest component today: the turbocharger.
Every automaker downsizing an engine and installing a turbocharger owes a debt of gratitude to Saab for leading the way.

I had an argument with a Focus ST owner about the fact that his car would not exist if not for Saab. He was very stubborn in his wrongness.

...or the Turbo Jetfire?
Turbo Jetfire[edit]
In 1962 and 1963 Oldsmobile built a turbocharged version of the 215. The small-diameter Garrett T5 turbocharger with integral wastegate was manufactured by Garrett AiResearch and produced a maximum of 5 psi (34 kPa) boost at 2200 rpm. The engine had 10.25:1 compression and a single-barrel carburetor. It was rated at 215 hp (160 kW) at 4600 rpm and 300 lb·ft (410 N·m) at 3200 rpm. In development, the high compression ratio created a serious problem with spark knock on hard throttle applications, which led Olds to use a novel water-injection system that sprayed metered amounts of distilled water and methyl alcohol (dubbed "Turbo-Rocket Fluid") into the intake manifold air-stream to cool the intake charge. If the fluid reservoir was empty, a complex double-float and valve assembly in the Turbo-Rocket Fluid path would set a second butterfly (positioned between the throttle butterfly and the turbocharger) into the closed position, limiting the amount of boost pressure. Unfortunately, many customers did not keep the reservoir filled, or had mechanical problems with the turbocharger system which resulted in many of the turbo-charger installations being removed and a conventional 4 barrel carburetor and manifold installed in its place.
The turbocharger was offered only in a special Jetfire model, which was the second turbocharged passenger car offered for public sale. The Chevrolet Corvair Spyder Turbo also manufactured by GM was ahead the Oldsmobile Jetfire Turbo by only a few weeks. Only 9,607 were sold in two model years, and many were converted by dealers to conventional four-barrel carbureted form.

Re: For All Sad Words Of Tongue And Pen, The Saddest Are The
But SAAB was the most successful in keeping with turbocharging for the long run, and pushed the state of technology greatly over the years.
I will say that Chrysler probably sold the most turbocharged vehicles back in the '84-'94 or so timeframe. They were also the first to use a coolant-cooled center turbo housing, so they didn't cook the turbo bearings on shut-down. Yeah, automated cool-downs with electric water pumps would have been even better, but it was 30 years ago and they were mass-marketed vehicles.

Where former SAAB engineers end up: Vicura AB, out of TROLLHÄTTAN, Sweden ( http://www.vicura.se/ )
I spent about 4 hours today learning how to use their systems simulation software and then we went out for a lunch of pizza / calzones.
