If a car doesn't have a gauge, it probably has an idiot light. So if the alternator dies, you'll get a warning illuminated. Some cars have both a gauge and an idiot light. Best of both words...

I know when the Alfa's alternator croaked after being overworked from recharging a completely flat battery, I got a nice big red light with ALT in the middle of it. Yeah, I've got an oil pressure gauge and an oil warning light (just in case you didn't know that something's wrong if your oil pressure is 5 PSI).

Parts of the Sonic design cues were taken from motorbikes - example is the dash cluster and the front headlamp setup.
