If the world had just 100 cars

Post by Boston Fit »

Surprise! Most cars in the world still have manual transmission. And because it is colorful, the infographic is most likely accurate.

Not really such a surprise when you think about it. North America seems to be the only place the automatic caught on, yet we only make up a small portion of the vehicles in the world.
Two pedals, two feet, too easy.

Seems automatics have caught on, if not yet dominated the market, in Europe:

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. I had no idea that Iran had a car manufacturer.

So there are more manual transmissions than all else combined (automatics, CVT, and all versions of the dual clutch automatic)??? Wow, would have never guessed that.

Not surprising most are manual. Only North America is lazy enough to not bother with standard, and in other countries you HAVE to start and take driving tests in a manual unless you have a reasonable disability

I think it's a peer pressure thing in England. If you take the test in an automatic you're only allowed to drive automatics and they put something on your license to that effect, at least as far as I recall. You're considered a weenie if you have that designation on your license.

I've gotten to the point where I will take any color EXCEPT black, white, silver, or gray.

I was surprised that red outnumbers blue, and that diesels comprise 35%.

Great report. Yes, it seems like autos started sharply gaining European market share in 2008 or so. Still, it's good to know that Europe is still holding strong at ~80% manual, by and large.

When I started in Automotive Engineering, Japan & Europe Amish-to-Slush ratios were about the same. Sometime in the 1990s the Japanese car sales flipped over to being predominantly slushbox. We heard it was the traffic jams that caused the change, but I'd think that in these modern times, it would also be that folks are too busy in their cars to put down their devices and concentrate on driving. Japanese housing is very small - they don't have room to accumulate things, so what they do own tends to be the latest and greatest in personal technology.
