Re: I'm starting to get depressed about the automotive future

The Cummins is by far the best of the Big Three diesel engines available. The reliability and longevity are unmatched. As is the fuel economy, for those who care. I feel like those are the types of people who do care, which is why they opt for the manual. At my last job we used to service tons of ca...

Re: I'm starting to get depressed about the automotive future

I never saw myself having a Mopar or an HD diesel but availability of manuals has pushed me there. Not a fan of the extra maintenance or complexity or the gross overkill for 99% of my driving, but it is what it is until something else catches my eye. Except the Ram manual is over. With the absolute...

Re: The beast has come...

Theres something about the burble of exhaust turning to a roar and drowning out the radio that I like. I also take long-ass road trips and need music regardless of my exhaust situation. The radio helps improve my fuel economy in these situations as well. Since I get about 20mpg out of a four cylinde...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

It could, if thats your thing. I upsized from 17s to 18s and went wider but kept the diameter almost identical for speedometer accuracy. You may be able to get a slightly wider or narrower tread with a different sidewall ratio that works.

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

Since your tires are an odd size, would it be better to change to a more common size with nearly the same diameter?

Re: Frustrations of a new-ish first timer

Sometimes it takes a while, especially with newer cars, but eventually you'll realize that you've stopped thinking about driving and it will be easier.

Working as I do at a dealer called Lawless, I can attest that those physicists and their physics arent always quite right

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

With the two door, the wheelbase is going to be the limiting factor for towing. I think the reality is that most people don't pay very close attention to tongue weight or overall payload number; they just take the max trailer weight number published and go off that. And as you know, tongue weight, ...

A few things of note: -A good dispatcher will make sure both the gravy and shit work are fairly distributed, as well as monitoring every techs hours to make sure nobody is falling too far behind. -Flat rate wages are almost always higher than hourly since there is less of a chance of a loss for the ...

Re: You Fixed the Ops, Now Fix My Car!

Flat rate is definitely both a blessing and a curse. I can make serious money when the work is good, especially with our bonus plan. But god forbid I get stuck with two or three crap warranty jobs. Fortunately we have a guarantee plan, but that only pays out 75% of the time we're on the clock at wor...

Re: Misc Thread VI: Return of the Threadi

I have finally confirmed that the Jeep doesn't mind towing. Put about 2100 pounds behind it (that little 1200 lb capacity Harbor Freight trailer is a champ) and it did quite well both acceleration and braking. Being a two door, the tow rating is only 2000 lbs, but I see no reason that it couldn't ha...

Re: So I got two new tires for the Mazda 5 today

Didn't bother to read comments. Being lazy. As a technician who deals with this stuff all day and also understands the physics involved and the driving habits of most morons on the road: Good tires go on the front more often than not. They have far more important work to do than the rears. Steering ...

Re: Honest Engines

Would there be a way to design that platform to take transverse 4 cylinder engines and longitudinally mounted inline 6 cylinder engines? Or would it have to be RWD/AWD only? Curious because RWD platforms for large cars are usually expensive, at least when they're sold. This intrigues me though eith...
