Meaning spinning tires in 2nd and I never powershifted my car ever. Powershifting is shifting without letting off the gas pedal. I always come off.ihartmacz wrote:What do you mean "barking"?
The only time my escort could do anything with the tries going into second was if I power shifted (Mashing accelerator while in the shifting process), it would chirp them.
Although some of this was outrageous; you were abusing the car. You can't blame the dealer for being at least a little suspicious, escecially with over rev codes in the ECU. As an added note there's a break-in period of so many miles you've got to follow (usually being easy on the car, no hard stops, acceleration, or high-revs if you can help it) to maintain your warranty.
I'm not trying to be an ass, I'm just trying to be objective.

I've powershifted once, and it was a half-ass powershift. I clutched in with the gas down, and the revvs shot to like 5500, nearly 1k over redline, and I just let off the gas and started to let the clutch out to bring the revs down before any damage was done. My car doesn't have a rev limiter, that was one of the way I found out.

i'll tell you right now..as a VW fanatic, I WILL NEVER buy a NEW VW CHASIS. Too many things go wrong on a new build, especially that 2.5, it's one of the newest motors in the VW line up. Thats what happens when you buy a cheaper German car. you didn't get a lemon, there all liek that, and ALL VW transmissions suck ass.
I've had to do 4, FOUR transmission swaps on my jetta, I got so good at them that if i prepped the new tranny going in, i could take a trans out and slap the new one in around 1 1/2 hours even.
Now, on my 4th trans, my Reverse gear is on the way out.

That's a German for you.Sisrahtac wrote:VW dealers are notorious for being flakey. Last week they said they'd call me and I'm still waiting.. So I'll just have to yell at them over the phone tommorow.
My car runs fine though. Actually, it seems as though the more I abuse it, the better it runs.

And why were you spinning in 2nd? Sounds to me like this isnt regular driving at all... and how did you manage to throw a "over rev" code?Terrence901 wrote:Meaning spinning tires in 2nd and I never powershifted my car ever. Over rev code came from downshifting beyond 6k which that is its rev limit. And I didn't let the car break in. The dealer said the tranny stuff was a one time thing not a over time thing meaning it broke one time like dropping a glass on concrete not dropping it several times to break. ANd the tranny broke twice upshifting only.

So just to sum this up, you have a brand new car with only 3,000 miles on it and your front tires are worn 50% more than your rears. Since your tires are brand new, you've worn 50% of your front tires off in less than 3,000 miles?
I'd say you've been beating the shit out of your car. "Barking" the tires causes pretty significant drivetrain shock.

This thread is just silly. I just bought a new TV and when I got it home I threw it out the window (but only once, not repeatedly). The guy said he wouldn't replace it... Can you believe the nerve of some people?
Someone on this forum (johnf, I think) constantly repeats something you should read: "Treat your car right and it will treat you right" (or something to that tune). In your situation this means: stop abusing your car and it will stop breaking. Your driving is the only thing that resembles a lemon, in my humble opinion.

Thanks, areben. While I do feel that it's alright to have a little fun in your car, understand that most consumer vehicles are not built to be taken to the edge of their operating capacity without frequent failure. So treat your car right, and it'll get you there.

Actually, race cars break down more often than consumer cars do. Just watch an episode of Pinks. Those cars break down on almost every run down the 1/4 mile. And they're built to run hard.Johnf514 wrote:Thanks, areben. Anyway, I tend to agree with everything here. If you're wearing down tires that much, in only 3000 miles, you're really doing something wrong. I've got 13,000+ on my car, put down rubber, had some fun, ground some gears, and bounced off the rev-limiter, but both my rears and fronts still look new.
Does anyone else think he was doing crazy stuff in the break-in period, too? That could have a lot to do with his problems, don't you think?

drive a car with a race trans and drive it like a typical person. I bet it will out last a typical car trans.
To the OP- you know better than to beat a car like that, especially when it's the trans..and even more when its a VW TRANS. i never read the whole post you made, but front tires gone in 3k miles? at this rate, you'll need a tire every oil change.

He was clearly thrashing the life out of the car, and we've only heard his side of the story! Imagine what the dealer might have to say on the subject.Nychold wrote:

I think it is important to remember too that modern passenger cars are being built to be fuel efficient and produce low emissions while still being powerful, quiet, and comfortable. That means tight tolerances and lighter materials, and that means they will not suffer being abused as much as older cars might have done, and will certainly be more expensive to repair.
As you say, race cars are built to take hard use and still break down on a regular basis. Heck, they have to be taken apart and put back together again after almost every event. Taking a car that is designed to need no more service than an oil change every 5K and drive it like that and of course it's going to break.
I certainly hope the dealer does not get stuck paying for the damage he has done. That just comes out of the pockets of all the responsible VW owners out there.
Just some guy on the Internet. Heed with care.
