Hellcat-powered Challenger SRT gets big boost to fight Mustang, Camaro
New engine rated at more than 600 hp

Image

DETROIT -- The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT unveiled today is Chrysler Group’s first use of a new 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine rated at more than 600 hp to take on the Ford Mustang GT500 and Camaro ZL1.

The motor, known as the Hellcat, is expected to rival that of the 640-hp, 8.4-liter naturally aspirated V-10 that powers the automaker’s halo car, the 2014 SRT Viper.

For 2015, Dodge will split its Challenger SRT into two levels -- one with its traditional 6.4-liter Hemi, which has been increased from 470 hp to 485 hp and its torque rating from 470 pounds-feet to 475 pounds-feet -- and the higher-end version with the Hellcat. Either can be mated to a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Hellcat-powered Challenger will come with two key fobs, Dodge said. A black key fob automatically limits the engine’s output to 500 hp, while a special red key fob unlocks its full power. A separate valet mode that can be unlocked only by a programmable code dramatically limits the output of the Challenger SRT engine to no more than 4,000 rpm and disables launch control.

Dodge is also introducing new electronic drive modes on the 2015 Challenger SRT that uses electronic switches through the coupe’s Uconnect infotainment system to control horsepower, shift speeds, steering, traction and suspension.

Hellcat Horsepressure Numbers Released - Higher than expected?

The all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT, with its supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® Hellcat engine, produces an unprecedented 707 horsepower and 650 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful Challenger ever, Dodge’s most powerful V-8 ever and the most powerful muscle car ever.
The Challenger’s new 6.2-liter Supercharged Hellcat engine is also the first factory supercharged HEMI, as well as Dodge and SRT’s first application of V-8 supercharger technology. For the first time in Chrysler Group history, the all-new 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT with a Hellcat engine comes standard with two key fobs—red and black. The red key fob is the only key that can unlock the full 707 horsepower and torque potential of the Challenger SRT Hellcat engine; while the black key fob limits the driver to a reduced engine output of 500 horsepower.
In addition to the awe-inspiring 707 horsepower of the new Hellcat HEMI, the Challenger SRT Hellcat has been redesigned and totally re-engineered to be the most true-to-form muscle coupe on the market with performance-enhancing technologies inside and out, including the new TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-new interior inspired by the classic 1971 Challenger.

I like Autoweek's copy better:
Dodge just announced that the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat will deliver 707 hp, in addition to 650 lb-ft of torque. Let us repeat. 707 hp. That's more than the last Corvette ZR1. More than the new Corvette Z06. Did we mention that's more than the frickin' Viper's V10?
To get that 707 hp, make sure to bring the red key. The black key is for children, new drivers and small animals. It offers a laughably low 500 hp.
The Hellcat comes with a TorqueFlight eight-speed transmission -- unless equipped with a romping six-speed manual. Yeah, you can try to tame all 707 horses yourself, if you dare.

Yeah, read that on Jalopnik yesterday. Crazy, huh? 707 HP...holy crap. And that's net HP. Imagine what the rating would have been back in the early musclecar era when they used gross HP ratings.....

The newer cars are so far ahead of any of the older muscle cars that we are truly living in the golden age right now. The HP race just took a leap forward from when Ford decided to build a Mustang with 662 HP. Where does it all end? And unless you have a truckload of money, you simply can't buy a car with that much HP....and even then, we're talking 12 or even 16 cylinders (yes Veyron, I'm looking at you...)

New for ’20: The HALcat

"These manifestations of automotive brains and brawn may converge by, let’s say, 2020 and produce the HALcat, its name hybridized from “Hellcat” and HAL, the truly intelligent self-learning but villainous computer in Stanley Kubrick’s epic 1968 film, ‟2001: A Space Odyssey.”

If HAL can plot to take control of a rocket ship zipping a gazillion miles per hour through space, surely Smart Assistant can take over for a late-for-his-appointment driver and handle an earthbound Dodge Challenger and its 6.2L supercharged Hemi V-8 that’s good for at least 200 mph (320 km/h) and a 10.8-second quarter-mile.

JLR demonstrates Smart Assistant’s smarts in a video showing a Brit named Chris Morgan driving a standard-issue Range Rover while receiving a steady stream of customized messages on its head-up display: ‟Leave now to arrive at your meeting on time”; ‟Would you like to call Faye Morgan now? ”

Tweak Smart Assistant’s algorithms in the HALcat and it might ask, ‟Blow doors off Z06 in next lane?” or ‟Raise cabin temperature prior to pizza pick-up?” in addition to ‟Would you like to call Faye Morgan now?”

The HALcat easily could outrun not only a Range Rover with an angry husband at the wheel but also the current crop of experimental autonomous cars, which include an Audi TT, Lexus RX 450H, Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen Passat and the Google curiosity that would look at home in a ‟Dilbert” comic strip."

Charger with the Hellcat motor to only come with a slushbox.

But something about 5 mph more top speed.

More a disappointing continuation of the status quo than news, really, as there's been no clutch pedal in the Charger since its reintroduction.

This is what's most puzzling to me. Isn't it as simple as "drag-and-drop" from the Challenger??? The Challenger has been available with stick since the beginning, why not the Charger? It doesn't make any sense.

I keep on reiterating to people that ask why I don't get a Charger SRT8 when I mention to them my intention of buying a Chevy SS, that if the Charger SRT8 came with a stick, I would ALREADY BY DRIVING ONE. They are losing out on customers like me, and us (which should number in the hundreds/thousands at the least, I know, not big numbers when the big picture is concerned) with what is almost a no-engineering-cost drop-in for Chrysler. Oh well.

Even though its essentially the same chassis, its not the same actual vehicle. So to have a manual would require a whole new set of (expensive) crash tests to certify it with an alternate transmission. I assume EPA drive tests also come into play financially.

They were willing to absorb all those expenses for the Challenger. What makes the Charger any different, aside from two extra doors? Why did they not shell out the equivalent dough to certify the Charger too? They did for the Dart for heaven's sake.

Its neither the economy nor performance model in the Dodge line. And laziness.
