Ford saves money on fenders...

Post by Rope-Pusher »

...and passes the savings on to you!

Accountants at Ford spilt the beans and told the engineers what fenders were costing the company. The engineers then proceeded to cancel fenders and, with the money they'd saved, add a sequential shifting 6-speed manual transaxle to the Focus with Ecoboost.

The article mentions wheel tethers. How do wheel tethers work?

Yeah. When you smack the wall, the wheels may bust off, but not go bounding off over the fence. Nobody likes to spend a couple hours searching for "Oh where oh where has my little wheel gone?"

I understand the purpose well enough, flying wheels are a big danger. What I don't understand is the design.

It has to be attached to some kind of ball-bearing sleeve of some sort. That is the only way I can see it working.
