Scion RWD - FTW?

Post by Rope-Pusher »

The FR-S (which stands for front-engine, rear-wheel drive, sport) is a precursor to a new model that will join the Scion lineup next year. The new car is the spiritual successor to the AE86 Corolla, which remains a highly sought after model for its front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, light curb weight and well balanced chassis.

A Subaru boxer engine will power the vehicle, but contrary to early rumors of a force-induced powerplant, it's a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter example. The engine features Toyota's D4-S injection system, which employs both direct and port injection to increase horsepower and torque, while maintaining fuel economy. Of course, that's not to say a turbocharged model couldn't come later on.

Transmission choices will include a six-speed manual or automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. A limited-slip differential will also be a part of the package to help effectively distribute power.

We don't have Scion in Europe, so I wonder what it's going to be called here. Toyota? Subaru? Toybaru? Lexus?

Fun?

Just as long as they don't call it "Late to the fillin' station!"

Fingers crossed for this vehicle. Toyota/Scion need some type of "fun" car in their lineup. Every other auto manufacturer does.

Looks like a Z to me.

Why would Toyota put a Subaru engine in when Toyota is so popular for their own engines? They could use the 2.7 from the Tacoma if they don't want to adapt a transverse engine.

I don't know how the US market will like a car that looks like that but only has a 2.0 NA, unless it's bargain priced.

Anyway, I'm happy to see another RWD 3-pedal come to market.

At that price, they aren't looking to give them away, are they?

2 liter? I'd rather have a Hyundai Genesis Coupe or a Ford Mustang.

Well, it's supposed to be the successor of AE86, not the Supra.

Can I still deliver tofu through Mount Akina with this car? That is the only thing I'm concerned about.

But if it can't compete in the current market, what's the point?

What else is new? But then again, Honda has been geared towards FF for as long as I can remember with a lot of their cars.

So, how much light? How much power? If it was 2000 lbs and $175 horsepressure, it could be fun. At 3000 lbs, not so much.
