True, but how accurate and precise can a phone-accelerometer be? What about movement of the iPhone itself as it shifts around during acceleration?

id imagine they would use the phones GPS instead. how fast can a 3G GPS refresh, maybe some of you phone people know.

3G doesn't have anything to do with GPS...3G is the cell network, GPS is separate from that.

i figured 3g is the fastest network so the gps on a 3g phone would be able to refresh its location faster because of the faster network. i guess not.

how fast does a regular phone GPS refresh then?

Damnit. If I knew the iPod Touch was able to do this I would've gotten it over the Classic. Too late to return it now.

By the way, the 3G iPhone has Assisted GPS (A-GPS) like most cell phones. It uses the cell phone towers as well as satellites to locate you so sometimes it can take longer.

satellite-based GPS isn't related to cell-tower triangulation.

Confusingly, the 1st gen iPhone used cell-tower triangulation to find its location, but the current one uses bona fide sat-based GPS in addition to cell-tower triangulation

sat-based GPS's are pretty dang accurate with speed checking.

gps sucks for stuff like this... only updates the data once a second so its way too slow. something like this would be a fun gimmick, no more i would say.

The original iPhone had GPRS/EDGE instead of 3G and it didn't have GPS at all (UK version anyway)

This is why it didn't sell that well in the UK or Europe for that matter. Normal phones here have 3G capabilities as standard and they are not all that expensive.

Easy way to remember the differences between all these is

GPRS/EDGE - Data transfer (quite slow)
3G - Data transfer (faster)
GPS - Used to pin point your location by using satellites in orbit. You must have map loaded on the device so it can work out where it is. No data is actually transferred.

an iphone would just annoy me.... i hate things with crap battery life. iphone 3g is terrible. My itouch can play music for like 20hrs straight so it's sweet, videos and such drain more but gps+3g in the latest iphone would make it cew threw batteries in a few mere hours
