ok a little searching on IWSTI shows me that i don't really need a turbo timer on the STi b/c the turbo is oil AND water cooled, so the water continues to cool the turbo after the car is shut off. apparently a coolant tank of water sitting near the hot turbo creates a convection current keeping the water flowing through the turbo after the car is shut off.

If you're supposed to idle for 1-2 minutes, then it makes sense that if you're off boost for the 1-2 minutes before shutting down, whether you're idling or driving slowly, it should be OK. Or if you're worried about it, you can always get a turbo timer.
The previous owner of my ZX wrecked the turbos b/c he never idled the car and the oild in the turbo's cooked. the end result: Paolo got new turbo's for 0$

After a few days of driving my new STi I think ive got the whole manual transmission thing under control. Ive heard some noises that I dont think I should have heard but its ok. AND THE STI IS A F***IN BEAST. Its wayyy quicker and faster than my old wrx..I can barely handle it and I love it...awesome car..Im buying a new 1 every 2-3 years untill I die..LOL

The NASIOC turbo timer FAQ says this probably isn't necessary, at least for modern Subarus.JackBauer wrote:yea, it's important that you let the car idle for one or 2 minutes before turning the the car off on a turbo charged engine.
"2002MY WRX TURBO COOL DOWN PROCEDURE
FHI's position regarding this is that it is not necessary to perform a "cool down/idling" procedure, as was recommended with past turbo models. Our current 2.0L turbo engine has a far greater cooling capacity and, coupled with technology advances, makes this practice no longer necessary. This explains why information about cool down is not included in the 2002MY Impreza Owner's Manual."
But of course if you are still worried about it, read the rest of that FAQ to learn how to install a turbo-timer, which keeps the engine idling for a minute after you remove the keys to allow it time to cool down.
Edit: Well that was somewhat redundant. Sorry.

yes, yes it is but after a week or 2, you will get used to it, and then it won't feel as sickeningly fast, and you will want to start beefing it up. then you will drive some other car and you will feel like you are driving an RC car and that it just won't GO! then you will get back in your car and it will feel fast again!A SiK STi wrote:AND THE STI IS A F***IN BEAST.

Thanks for those sites..the first one was really cool. And the gold rims look like crap on a white STi..but I didnt have a choice because it was the only one they had. Im thinking about trading rims with my friend who has a black 05 wrx, the gold will look good on his car.
