Semi-dropped clutch from 5k+ into 3rd gear at 30mph

Post by savethemanual »

I got a new car recently, it's a '16 6-speed manual Kia Soul. It's actually got a pretty slick transmission. I've been driving sticks for 14 years. But oddly enough this is the first blatant mistake I've ever really noticed myself making and I can't stop thinking about the possible effects of it.

What happened was I was doing something completely uncharacteristic, I was coasting in neutral and didn't realize it and had several conversations going in a full car. The light coming up turned yellow so I accelerated hard for a sec to try and get through it. Of course revs when up but the car wasn't moving, and it took me a second to realize with how quiet new car engines are. When I realized the light was well into being yellow, and so I quickly shifted to a gear to get through the intersection. That gear was 3rd. Bad choice, considering I dropped from about 5500k RPM and was only going about 25-30mph. I slipped it over a time interval of about a second, so not a hard drop, and heard a couple blips of cutoff which I thought was traction control. I don't hang out in neutral like that normally, it caught me by surprise and I just didn't make the right gear choice under the pressure of the moment.

Ever since I've been noticing that my clutch shudders when I accelerate from a stop in the morning when it's cold, but only on the first 4-5 starts from stop. Shifting is 100% normal at all other times. Maybe the car is just like that and I didn't notice in the few weeks of prior ownership, but does anyone think I could have warped it or glazed it at all from my mistake?

I don't think you did any harm. To really build up some heat, you would have had to slip the clutch at a relatively high rpm for an extended period of time. Also, I don't think that with the type of driving you were doing previous to "the Event" that your clutch disk, flywheel or pressure pate were significantly pre-heated.
