I sometimes find myself explaining to people that using https to connect to facebook and post something for everyone to see doesn't magically make their post secure, protect their account from phishing, or any of the other things they think it will do.

Yeah, that too. I've thought about requiring SSL, but not all clients support it. Plus, it's "extra work" for everyone to configure. It's bad enough that I'm using a non-standard port number.

SSL is an encryption protocol commonly used for a variety of types of internet communications. It needs to be an option you can turn on in your client program for it to work for IRC.

Whenever you use a website with https:// instead of http://, you are using SSL. That's the most common/well known use of SSL but it really is very widely used.

I have been lost in this thread a long time ago. That's why I'm not in the chat - every time i want to get in, I need someone to hold my hand and walk me through. Then sometime later - weeks or months later - I've forgotten how. My brain functions and excels in different aspects.

For anyone with an Android phone, I recommend trying out AndChat (free).
AndChat is a multi-server internet relay chat (irc) app for Android, designed to work on both phones and tablets, and includes a tablet optimized layout.

The hard drive crapped out on the server, so it'll be out of service until tonight at the earliest.

Herro? Anyone? I'm still here... though not very often, since I've been busy with the new house. Oh, and I also have a new domain name! 8)

Does anyone use the chat server anymore? Here's the new address:

Server = irc.cedarparkserver.com
Port = 9000 (9001 for SSL)
Channel = #standardshift

EDIT: Forgot to add the CNAME. :oops:
