...and 3-speed slushboxes, too!

Post by Rope-Pusher »

Some (All?) of you may have seen this, but while I was sleeping, VW stopped production of the Gulf Mk I in South Africa back in August. They had been producing them there for the last 25 years with tooling from the closed Westmoreland PA plant. Something like 35 years from the first MkI to the last off the line. Reminds me of how they continued Beetle production in Mexico for all those years. This link has more info:

Whey back when, I had a friend who thought my 3-speed bike was like the first 3 gears of his 10-speed bike. I had to show him that my ratios were more like his 2nd, 5th and 9th gear ratios. Funny, but he grew up to run a bike shop. I guess that means I was a free-lance business consultant back when I was only an 8th grader. Makes me want to go look him up and ask him for a couple bucks.

I think we've crossed this path before with 4-speed Amish transmissions that had more overdrive ratio than some 6-speeds.

...and that's the only part of the car YOU can see while you are driving it! I'm going to start a business selling rusty, banged-up cars to blind drivers. Just because we're such close friends from this forum, I'm gonna let you get in on the ground floor and invest in my company. It's going to be a very inexpensive company to start up. I won't even need a logo, because my potential customers couldn't tell if I had one anyway.

Oh, and I'm also starting up a company to sell noisy cars to deaf drivers.

...and another one to sell oil-burning cars (cars with worn-out engines, not diesels) to drivers that smell bad.

...and expensive cars to drivers with too much money. No, wait, there are a number of companies already doing that. Never mind!

Same as my 1980 Buick's 3 speed slushbox. That car has a TH350 transmission and a 2.73 rear end.

I think we were discussing the Tercel and comparing it to modern 6 speeds, right? Image

cudda bean. All that matters in the end is what the RPM are at when you're cruisin', and even that doesn't mean so much if you don't cruise very far or long.

I wonder if they're replacing it with the MK4 City Golf like they have in Canada (No more MK4 City Jetta as of this year).
