Best & Worst State License Plates

Post by Shadow »

Which state has the best license plates? Worst? Now I'm talking standard issue plates and they have to the current. Personally, I hate the newest version of the New York plate, so I actually decided to get a specialty plate to avoid the ugliness of the standard issue plate:

Standard Issue:

The design I chose isn't exactly beautiful, but I think it looks a lot better than the ugly yellow plates:

I prefer simple plates. Plates detract from cars, so the cleaner the design the better.

I enjoy MA plates for that reason.

I think Mass plates have been the same since...well...forever. Or close to it.

I too like simple license plates. (who would have known! )

That being said, I like the ones that Michigan has. Mine looks like this:

I also love that MI doesn't require front license plates!

I liked these ones as well.

I don't like the newest ones as much:

It's a nice picture, but as others have said, I prefer simplicity in a license plate.

I haven't seen that last one you posted yet. I have seen this one, slightly different than mine. I don't like it as much, glad I got mine before this:

I find standard Minnesota plates a bit dull...

So I went for one version of our critical habitat plates...

By the way, how many other states cycle through plate numbers? We have to get new plates every 7 years so they can recycle their numbers. Sometimes our plates are numbers first, sometimes letters. I think the critical habitat plates are lifetime until you decide to get rid of them, like the support our troops plates.

i personally like even your "dull" standard MN plate, tbh, especially compared to our new empire gold plates (the orange one shadow posted). i think the empire gold NYS plates can look good, and i actually like them on my grey jetta. i thought i would miss the old plates, but i don't (not that they were much better). i don't think we recycle plate numbers here; i think they either add a number or letter (or switch a number to a letter) instead, and some people have had the older white plates for a long time. they may make you turn them in after a certain number of years, maybe 10.

Taking a bit of liberty with the original question, my vote for "best" goes to the license plate of any EU member state. For example:

I have the plate style you posted, but I prefer Texas black plates. Great contrast and black/white combo looks great on most cars.

Teas does the same thing. Every 7 years you get a new plate or when you buy a car, you get new plates. Unlike in IL, where you transfer your plate to the new car you buy. I still have my first IL license plate; it's hanging on the patio.
