Hand position while driving?
The other day I was wondering where other people keep their hands while driving. Do you have a set position that you always find yourself putting your hands, or do you just put them wherever on the steering wheel? If you do have a set position, where is it at?
Right hand - in between 12 and 1 o'clock
Left hand - about 8 o'clock

I typically cradle my sack as I drive. Less testicular roll that way.

It's funny, ever since getting the GTI I go for the old 10 & 2 more often than I ever have before. Must be something about the firmer suspension...

Re: Hand position while driving?
It depends what I'm driving and the distance from armrests to wheel, but generally around 8 to 10 or 4, with my other hand on the stick or out the window. Occasionally 12. Not 10 and 2 often.

Re: Hand position while driving?
Usually, my left hand would be on the wheel at 6 o'clock and my right hand would usually be on the stick, or the other stick. The "other stick" is the handbrake lever for all you gutter-minds out there. For steering, I usually have my hands at 9 and 3.

Right hand - tdc (top dead centre) of the steering wheel, left hand - out the window. Obviously this changes when shifting, but if I'm at speed and cruising I generally don't keep both hands on the wheel.

Generally my hands are at 9 and 3, though my steering wheel has grip bulges at 10 & 2, which I'll use sometimes:

Re: Hand position while driving?
Not sure, have to observe as I drive, but seems a lot of the time while cruising the freeway I am holding at 10:30 and 4:30 because my left elbow is on windowsill.
On rare occasion in automatics I have found myself with both hands on top of the wheel and crossed--right hand left of left hand.
EDIT: On the drive home I played around with positions and it seems I might have my left hand anywhere from 8:00 to 12:00, but the right hand stays more or less at 4:00 when cruising. More driving and I'll get a better idea.

Re: Hand position while driving?
I forgot about grip bulges and such. In the Buick I have a remote control for the stereo. I have no use for such a thing, but where it mounts on the steering wheel makes a perfect hole to stick my finger in and spin the wheel around.
Also, it's a two-spoke wheel with the spokes aiming slightly down, maybe about 8 and 4. Sometimes I hold a spoke.
Here it is turned almost 180 degrees:

Re: Hand position while driving?
When cruising: Left hand around 8 and right hand resting on the side (sometimes holding seat thigh bolster, sometimes e brake, I'm not sure actually I have to go check... lol).
When streering, my hands will be at 9 and 3. I too have those bulges at 10 and 2 and mine is also a flat bottom steering wheel.

Re: Hand position while driving?
Not sure if I use the steering wheel bulges - I have those as well at 10 and 2. They are pretty substantial but I'm sort of indifferent to them.

Re: Hand position while driving?
Depends. Quite often 9...10-2...3, but especially on a freeway I have my hands on my lap at 5-7 or so. Stereo remote control is at 8 or so. Often, I drive with just one hand and too often find myself steering with the knee...

Re: Hand position while driving?
I like the 3 and 9 position as well. On my 91 I enjoyed driving at 4 and 8 on the two spokes leading to the wheel. I try doing that on the 2000 but sometimes the cruise control module gets in the way.
