Things You'll Never Do If You Drive a Stick:

Post by ClutchFork »

These are not absolutes but come on and post up your thoughts two. I'll start it off with these three:

1. Drive with the parking brake on.

2. Call for a tow if your starter dies (unless you are foolish enough to have parked at the bottom of a dip where it slopes up in both directions).

3. Let a valet park your car.

Creep forward at a light without thinking about it.

In some specific low-traction situations, driving with the parking brake on will give you more-effective traction.

- let people drive my car unless I know the have basic stick driving abilities and experience. Tried to teach an ex g/f once and it didn't go over well.

- look down at my shifter to ensure it's the right position/gear (I bet you have seen auto drivers do that while reversing out of a parking spot. Do you really have to look when going from R to D in an auto??)

- start creeping forward at the light because I'm turned around in my seat calming my kids and my foot eases off the brakes.

- wonder what other positions like L and 3,2,1 are on my shifter because I never use them

- hang a grocery bag around my shifter and use it as a trash bag for my fast food wrappers

- get into a perfectly functioning unfamiliar car I need to drive and acquire a puzzled look when it doesn't start (clutch interlock)

- get road head (unless driving 3 on a tree)

I did that in the VW. Worked great. Moving the shifter in the H-pattern had no more effect on the trash bag than moving a slushbox shifter linearly.

What about a shifter that sprouts from the floor under the dash and comes up on an angle, along with a bench seat? ;)

True but I don't own a truck with a floor shifter either. So take it as things that I will never do while driving a manual.

Oh, so it was "Out the Doorway" maybe, but NOT "Out the door".

Drive with your leaf arm dangling out the window--a sign of automatic transmission boredom enabled by the lack of need for two hands to drive.

True, and true also of an automatic but only rear wheel drive so far as I know, because what this fixes is the single wheel spinning in a one-legger rear differential (open differential) and I am not sure how the front drive cars work on this.

Or do front drive cars have front wheel parking brakes? And are there one-pawed front drivers or do they all send traction to both front wheels?

Arguable. I have a habit to hang my left arm out the window once I get into top gear and likely to stay in top gear for at least a few minutes. Although more often I'll just rest the elbow on the window sill.
