Help me decide -- which exhaust system?

Post by Shadow »

I've made the decision to install a dual exhaust system on my car. The stock exhaust system has two tips on the left side of the car only.....and it's VERY quiet. In fact, it's too quiet. I wanted something that gives the car a nice exhaust sound without being over the top or too noisy in any way. After attending a few Audi events/meets, I finally found a system that seems perfect for me. It gives the car a deeper tone without being loud or obnoxious. It's a very refined sound and it has a nice burble at idle, which is something that I didn't really expect from a 2.0T engine.

Anyway, I have the choice of dual tips or quad tips. Which way should I go? Below are pictures of each set-up. The black car obviously has the polished single 90mm tips each side, and the white car has the quad 90mm tips (in black, so they're harder to see). So my choice is number of tips (2 or 4) and the color of the tips (polished or black). Which do you think will look best on my Quartz Grey A5?

Polished or black? Really hard to say without taking a look at your car in person, but probably polished.

Also, after you get dual tips, you're required to get that trim piece on the rear bumper to fit around your exhaust tips!

Yeah, I was leaning towards the dual tips too, so I guess you guys all have the same opinion as me. The quad tips are nice, but I think they might be a bit much on a 2.0T engine. Then again, I saw a picture of a smart car with quad exhausts and that car only has a 3-cylinder engine! LOL

As for the lower valence....there are several different options. The black car pictured above uses an OEM A5 3.2 valence, which comes with dual tips of a smaller size. I like how the 90mm tips really fills it in nicely. The white car has an aftermarket valence specifically designed for quad tips. It only comes in a pseudo carbon fiber finish, but I think it would look better painted flat black. They also make an S-Line piece (which I have), but I think the standard 3.2 part looks a little better.

So far I have 3 votes for dual and none for quad. And one vote for polished tips and none for black.

Which exhaust systems were you looking at? I vote for dual-tips as well. Polished. Personally, I think dark tips only look good on white cars with matching dark wheels and trim.

It's an AWE catback system, without the downpipe.

Good point about the black tips. It probably would go well with black wheels and blacked out trim. My car is grey with silver trim, so the polished tips probably would go better.

Dual: 4 votes
Quad: 0 votes

Polished tips: 2 votes
Black tips: 0 votes

As I'm at work, I can't see the pictures, but going from memory of your car, I'd go polished dual tips. Quads can look decent, depends on the vehicle, but duals probably fit better. Quads, if on the wrong vehicle, fall into redneck-mobile category. "Let's through 8 exhaust pipes on my diesel 2500! Woo!"

Why don't you get the whole package from APR with the tune and exhaust system.
they have spring sale going on right now,
and I would match the colour of my exhaust tips to that of the wheels.

^ I think, with an A5, if you spring for quad tips, it will start to approach "S5-wannabe" territory.
