Re: Major accidents thread
Wow some CRAZY stories here..
I don't have any 'major' ones, just two close calls. Used to ride my motorcycle with no protective gear, until one day in the rain I came around a bend too fast (doing about 40 mph) on a state highway. Felt the back tire go out from under me, and I was on the ground sliding. Managed to come to a stop right on the centerline, just missing the SUV that was barreling down the other side. About 15 min, 3 cops and an ambulance later I got back on my bike and rode home, with a beat up ankle and road rash on my right arm. I've been wearing knee-high leather boots and a leather jacket ever since.
As for the car.. spun out one night in a snowstorm. Came around a bend, coming down a hill and lost traction. Car spun 90 degrees to the left and wound up on the other side of the road, just missing a mailbox. Could have been nasty if someone had been coming down the other side.

Yeah, I drive about 35,000 a year. I had my crash at 18, so that is about the same time as you.theholycow wrote:Umm, thanks?fa22raptorf22 wrote:And someone said I was an idiot LOL.
When you drive 40,000 miles per year as a 17 year old, and always push the limits of your car and ability, you're bound to have that kind of excitement on a regular basis. I could have driven like everyone else and not had those minor "accidents".
I'm too old to drive like that now.
That is my real name. Don't you see my photo just under it?That is rediculous "theholycow" (what is your real name??)

40K a year? How did you manage that ? I thought everything was all compressed in the Northeast.theholycow wrote:Umm, thanks?fa22raptorf22 wrote:And someone said I was an idiot LOL.

Not really. I know some people with a 10 mi commute, others with a 150+ mi commute. Depends on what part of the Northeast you live in.blauenlanze wrote: 40K a year? How did you manage that ? I thought everything was all compressed in the Northeast.

Yikes. I've never had an accident that appreciably crushed anything.fa22raptorf22 wrote:Yeah, I drive about 35,000 a year. I had my crash at 18, so that is about the same time as you.

4 days per week 25 miles each way 4x per day to pick up girlfriend, bring her to my place, bring her back to her house, go home. That's 21,000 just on normally scheduled dates. Then there's days when I skipped class to go to lunch with her, road trips once or twice a week to restaurants a hundred miles away, and totally random driving. Add a few miles to school, a bunch of miles to work, etc...blauenlanze wrote:40K a year? How did you manage that ? I thought everything was all compressed in the Northeast.
If I wasn't at school, there was a pretty good chance I was driving. I didn't get much sleep.
It was nuts.

I wish I could do that. Gas is expensive, and my SUV gets 17 MPG.

Gas was under a buck a gallon when I did that in my Caddy, which got 14mpg under my heavy foot. I had a bunch of saved money at the time and few expenses...

You need to trade your classic Alfa Romeo sports car for a nice, sensible Nissan Versa.

As I was sliding backwards through the intersection and across the lawn of the gas station, the thought that ran through my mind was "This must be what it's like to be in NASCAR!"

Re: Major accidents thread
See Paul,
You got lucky with that high speed maneuvering.
I was topping out 4th ~125mph when the front failed to steer down its line.
I had the swinging thing going on, but I couldn't get it to restick.
Now a crazy speeding ticket and a crash later, I think I am pretty good.

You will never see this guy (me) speeding around a bend. Straight-aways are one thing, but going too fast around a bend spells death for me.

Re: Major accidents thread
True. I have found that for the all of the possible curves on any given part of most highways, 80mph is the limit for staying in a lane, without having any traction problems.ElectroGhandi wrote:You will never see this guy (me) speeding around a bend. This being said, since reckless driving is for 85 +, this is a safe limit, and won't get you into trouble. But for me, I hit one of those curves at 120. So I asked for it. But then again I overlooked it, and didn't realize a bump/curve was coming up.
But stick with what you said Ghandi, I now follow 40mph off highway, 80 on, once again.

Re: Major accidents thread
I'm chicken-shit.
I do no more than 125 on straight sections of highways, and will do 100 tops around the corners (much less if it's like... the Sea-to-Sky or Coquihalla, or if it's raining).
While I had my "N" licence, I back my car out of the garage into my dad's van (which was parked crooked on the driveway, but I should have been looking more carefully). Left a few light scratches, but that "accident" left me a much more cautious driver.
Jeez, my experiences pale in comparison to your guys'.
