Do you push the clutch and put it in neutral and coast to a stop or down shift which do you think is better

I put it in neutral and coast to stop. I'd rather wear out my breaks faster then my clutch considering the cost of the two. Though that's only if there's no doubt i'm going to stop, otherwise I downshift.

Yeah if I know that I'm gonna have to stop like at a stop light, I will throw it in neutral. But it's definately more fun to downshift.

It's been discussed recently.

I brake while staying in gear until the engine speed goes to idle, then I pop it in neutral. Staying in gear allow you to accelerate immediately when you need to.

i hear people downshift from say 5th to 3rd. i'm sure this involves giving a lot of gas while rev matching right?

Coasting is dangerous because neutral won't power your car out of danger. You can fail a drive test by coasting (i.e. going in neutral for a distance longer then the length of your vehicle).

Nor would it save any gas. When you coast, the engine needs to burn gas to stay at idle. If the engine is engaged to a gear, it is most certainly turning faster than idle so the computer should shut off the fuel pump.

yes the car needs to burn to hold the idle rpm but it's more or less the same as if your pressing break... well anyway i know it's dangerous it has been posted before... but i love to coast quiet and peaceful

I just stay in gear and let the engine slow me down, no sense of wasting your brake pads when you can just use your engine. Just wait till you get to about 5-10 mph then push in the clutch. It shouldn't stall as long as your in 3rd or less gear.

If I were to approach a stop sign, I would clutch in, shift to first gear and brake with the clutch still engaged. When I come to a full stop, I soft launch from the stop sign.

I'm gonna start practicing the downshifting method. It seems more effective and practical. I also need practice in that area anyways.
