synchromesh question

Post by vw10 »

Does each gear in the countershaft rotate at the same speed ?
Does the countershaft immediately stop turning once you press the clutch ( in neutral) ?? that would make double clutching pointless,,,
or does it continue rotating because of inertia.
Also if the reverse doesn't need a synchro than if i blip the throttle in neutral at some high rpms and really fast shift in reverse, that would result in a grind since the countershaft is still spinning right ??

Yes, each gear on the countershaft is at the same speed.

No, the countershaft doesn't stop turning.

Yes, a non-synchro reverse will grind if the countershaft is spinning.

just what i expected, if countershaft is spinning at idle rpm than i guess it would take just under a second for it to stop after pressing the clutch right ? this is important because if i shift reverse immediately after pressing the clutch, that would grind
by the way does a 6 speed 2006 volkswagen mk5 have a synchro reverse ?

If you want to shift into reverse quickly after coming to a stop, just put the shift lever into a forward gear before selecting reverse gear.

Seems likely. My 5 speed 2008 MK5 did.

Most spin-down times from idle tend to be in the 2-2.5 second range.
