Loud and violent stall from standstill. Possible damage?

Post by goatnt »

I really appreciated your responses and feedback last time around, so I thought I'd bring you guys another noob question.

I recently pulled into a gas station, pulled the parking brake, and apparently forgot that I hadn't shut the car off. I came off of the clutch and brake at the same time and my car (09 Honda Fit Sport) and got a big loud stall, like every piece of metal under the hood had clapped.

Now I know that it's mostly told that stalling doesn't damage the car/tranny, but I'd always imagined that stall being the semi-gentle loss of power after a failed launch or something. Can I come to the same conclusion if it felt and sounded more like a sledge hammer under the hood?

It happens, and is harmless.

If it broke anything then you wouldn't be asking us, you'd be telling us what's wrong.

When learning I had a number of violent, bucking stalls that would sound like clanging dumbells. No big deal.

When I had those happen when I was learning, I was always too embarassed to remember the noises it made. The shuddering of the car is forever ingrained in my embarassment, however.
