I can see how it works, but rephrasing it is challenging.

Yes and I would love to diagram it out, but don't know how.

Here is a weird one:

Of all the saws I ever saw saw, I never saw a saw that saws as this saw saws.

I'm having trouble parsing that. I can only make four "that"'s work, I can't make the fifth one happen no matter which one I make it.
The teacher said that (1) the specific "that" (that "that," 2 & 3) which that specific student (that that student, 4 & 5) used was grammatically correct.

Technically, #4 is incorrect because it should be "which" as it is a non-restrictive clause. You've already told the reader which "that"...That "that." "That that student used," clarifies/reiterates. It does not restrict.

You could even make that one better.

That's better and may be how the original was, but I dis-remember now.

You are right. Also, since I don't remember the exact quote (it was from some grammar book and did have five "that"s in a row), but I think the was should be is, since it would still be true. I would also set off the non-restrictive clause with commas, so then it would be like this:
The teacher said that that that, which that student used, is grammatically correct.
Now we can clearly see the non-restrictive clause and we can eliminate it from the sentence and the sentence still makes sense since a non-restrictive clause is not essential to the sentence. So now the sentence might be more fun if the topic of discussion were which instead of that:
The teacher said that that which, which that student used, is grammatically correct.

Ooooohhhhh! What doe this have to do with shifting algorithms.

We are using algorithms to shift words around, right?
