What is the proper way to shift gears?

Post by jeff6666p »

What I'm doing right now is

Upshift

Start pressing clutch while releasing gas then shift and then going back on gas while releasing the clutch.

downshifting

Start pressing clutch while releasing gas then shift and then pre-rev alittle holding gas then releasing clutch.

Someone told me giving it gas while shift makes the clutch slip alittle and will make it wear out faster. I'm I shifting correctly, What is the proper way to shift gears?

Not true. It's a simplification that can be used for people who don't want to have to think or put in much effort, but since you went to the effort to sign up for the forum and ask, you are obviously interested in doing better.

The least amount of clutch wear happens if clutch RPM is perfectly matched to engine RPM. On a downshift that requires a decent amount of throttle usage; for an upshift it may require waiting for the engine to slow, no effort at all, or giving it a little gas (depending on how fast your engine RPM drops and how fast you move the shifter). If you can let the clutch pedal up really fast (called "dumping" the clutch) and the car doesn't jerk then you know you had a perfect rev-match.

It's fun to rev-match and it can make your driving smoother and make your shifts faster and reduce clutch wear, but...don't do it for clutch wear. Most people put way too much worry into clutch wear and get clutch paranoia that affects their driving in undesirable ways. (There are, of course, a rare few people who do the opposite and burn through a clutch in no time, but they're quite rare and nothing we tell them is going to prevent it.)

"Someone told me giving it gas while releasing the clutch makes the clutch slip" It was supposed this nor while "shift" sorry.

I always try to get the revs to match a close as possible. I'm trying to get to where I can shift to any gear up or down and not feel any kind of jerking motion at all, I can do this sometimes already. While holding the gas while pre-reving instead of bliping for down shift hurt the tranny? By what I said so far is the anything I should be doing differently?

No, keep doing exactly what you're doing.

Sounds like a nice car! Base model is always the way to go in my opinion. Simpler, less stuff to break. I don't like a lot of features on a car.

So far it's been working out pretty well, I just want to make sure that I'm not doing anything that will hurt it. Don't have any pics of it on my computer. The car is black and the hood, roof and spoiler is flat black don't know why thinking about getting vinyl wrap to cover it up so it will match the rest of the car. Interior is in descent shape it's tan and black. The drive side seat and seat belt is alittle torn up.

The hood can be easily un-bolted, and maybe the spoiler. You could probably get them professionally painted at a body shop for not much cost with them already off the car. Then it's just the roof...
