Why can't I shift into R while rolling backwards?

Post by shiftmate »

I wanted to back up a bit, and was facing uphill, so I released the parking brake and started rolling backwards. I wanted to speed it up a little, so I clutched in and tried shifting into R and felt gears grinding. :?

Rope, step in.

My guess is that it has something to do with reverse being unsynchronized.
Two pedals, two feet, too easy.

Sounds like your reverse gear is not synchronized.

I can shift into reverse while rolling backwards in the S-10, and have many times.

Would think that a 2001 Honda Accord would have a synchronized reverse. Maybe it is and the syncro is bad.

don't think they did; i don't think my 96 accord (with very similar drivetrain) did at least. 1st IS synchronized though (thanks to watkins for explaining that to me at the 2010 SS meat  )

I once had a 1963 Chevy that had a 3-speed. Neither reverse or first were syncronized. You could not downshift in to first coming into a light if it turned green. Either had to lug in 2nd or come to complete stop, unless it was a gravel road and you could slam on the brakes, go into a slide and throw it into first while still sliding along. Ah, the fun we had!
