Messed up a shift badly...

I leave home for work late to avoid traffic. I'm tired. I go to the gas station. As I leave, I launch in first. With my foot on the clutch, I see that there is no traffic on the main street, so I casually shift to second when I'm going about 10 mph.

Car's not moving too fast, though! Ok, more gas. And then an engine roar. Is that me or something happening outside? The heck? I look at my tach and I see that it almost reaches redline. I had shifted to fourth instead of second...

I doubt I have anything to worry about much, but I'd appreciate any comments.

You didn't get it completely in 2nd and it popped
out. Usually, it is harmless.

Much less likely you did indeed shift into 4th and your clutch is slipping severely.

Yeah, we've all done it. Generally if there are no immediate symptoms, then you're fine.

I've done something almost as bad, if not worse, in the opposite direction. I was moving 45-50 mph and was going to shift 6-4 in order to pass a nard on the highway who didn't know that 70 was legal and appropriate. I overshot 4 and went to second. Luckily I only went to 5,500 RPM and redline is at 6,500 (I found that a couple weeks ago - rev-limiters are...interesting) and I thought that I'd blow up the engine, it only had 3,500 miles on it, but all was good when I realized my goof and shifted up through the gears. All was gravy.

I did pretty much the same thing with the 2008 VW I had when I was test driving it. 80mph, missed 5th and got 3rd. The salesman didn't care, even though white smoke came out. Apparently no damage was done as it ran great for 45,000 miles.

I had a similar accident today.
I was stopped at a red light and waiting for the green light.
The light turned green so I push in the clutch and shift to 1st and let go of the clutch while giving gas.
and then BANG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (very loud) the shifter popped out and car no go.
There was some hesitation when I was moving the shifter into 1st. I guess I hadn't fully pushed it in.

The car is fine after that. Any possible damage? (sorry OP to threadjack... just found this post and thought it was similar)

Damage would almost certainly be immediately obvious. If you have to ask then there wasn't any damage.

So, was I in neutral and was I just revving the engine? The clutch was up and the car didn't accelerate when I pressed on the gas. But I was suprised that the tach shot up that high.

In any case, yeah, looks like my little baby is fine.

I occasionally have the Fiesta not like to go all the way into reverse. It doesn't happen often, but occasionally I think I've put it all the way into gear and it won't do anything and grinds a bit at me. I just immediately push the clutch back in, go back to neutral, and then into reverse. Seems to work every time...

Yukon all sew keep applying pressure to the shift knob, in the direction of Reverse gear, as you slowly let out the clutch and just as the input shaft starts to rotate, the idler gear will likely slide fully into Reverse position.
