Re: Driving in different shoes/sneakers
I notice that my first few shifts, less than 10 probably, are a little less smooth than normal when I get new shoes. Beyond that the adjustment is quick.

Re: Driving in different shoes/sneakers
Being a new manual driver myself, I find a profound difference between different types of shoes. Went off to work in my fancy To Boot New Yorks with hard leather soles and found that 30 seconds down the road I had no feel for the clutch!
Definitely a hair raising experience, but a valuable lesson learned.

Dress shoes are by far the worst things to drive in. Ill stick with barefoot or steel toe work boots.

Re: Driving in different shoes/sneakers
I just got one of those pairs of "shoes for crews" brand shoes that double as business casual/dress. The soles are nice because they're not so thick that nothing can be felt, but not so skinny that you feel like you're kicking a pile of biscuits.watkins wrote:Dress shoes are by far the worst things to drive in. I even went "old-man" style and got slip on shoes.
Re: Driving in different shoes/sneakers
I prefer driving in thin-soled shoes with heel-to-toe drop as low as possible. They give me the best feeling of pedals, which contributes to the smooth shifting.

Re: Driving in different shoes/sneakers
thin-soled/heeled shoes definitely make it easier to feel the pedals. i wear work/hiking boots almost everyday, for work and for support above my feet. the few rare times i switched to thinner soles or heels, it felt like i wasn't wearing shoes while shifting. now that i'm driving autos only, i don't notice as much a difference between shoes/boots, and there is no real adjustment period. i also tried driving without shoes at least a couple of times, and you have to try that if you haven't already

Definitely agree on the dress shoes part. I'm keeping my PUMAs with the rounded heels in the boot for just this reason!

Read about it here:

Soles look like the soles of the football scrimmage shoes I got at Meijer a few years back on clearance. Those knobs would provide superb grip.
Gotta get rid of the funky buckles.
Stick shiftin since '77

I prefer diving in wooden shoes.
I picked up mine at the Tulip Festival in Holland, MI.
