I've driven an automatic Escort of that vintage. It's loud and thrashy, but not much else. My 93 with the 1.9 was pretty hilarious though.

So i put struts and sway bar links on my birthday list (one week....) plus car repair work. and a clean idle control motor. cuz stalling sucks, cuz then no braking/hard to brake and no power steering which is physically impossible for me to steer then, with my physical problems :(

And i have a clock - cellphone/ipod touch

New tranny might have been cheaper than a new car.

Damn that stinks. If nothing else, now you can say you got 99 problems but an escort ain't one.

On facebook didn't you say it was the slave cylinder? That should be a small fraction of the price of a cheap beater car, even if you have to pay labor.

Seems like it is too late now...

Yeah, even if it was the whole trans, it would have been cheaper than a grand you'll now have to spend to get a new car, and that car's going to have a host of its own issues.

Not the best decision, in my opinion, unless you were going to spend 5 grand or more to get a much better car, period.

Somehow I missed "someone bought it for $150" the first time around. I wouldn't have posted that if I had seen it. No point continually discussing it now, that ship has already sailed.

Could you move closer to work and just walk for a year while you save for a decent car?

Depending on bus ticket cost, it could be fairly cheap as a method of transport. I looked up an unlimited pass in my town, not known for a fantastic bus system nor cheap system, and I could ride (without a special yearly rate) for a bit over $300. That's pretty darn cheap compared to most car payments.

between front struts, cv joint, sway bar links and whatever failed on transmission (apparently it was not slave cylinder but shift fork), it was not worth it for me to fix the car.

I am bussing now....
