Feck. I just replaced the alternator in my mom's 91 accord this past summer

Umm...I think there was a bolt you needed to tighten or loosen near the alternator. Not quite sure, my memory is fuzzy from that weekend.

Damn. If its anything like mine, there's a bolt, or it might be 2, that need to be loosened. Then you need to move the alternator itself to tighten/loosen the belt. But it isn't gonna budge easily. You'll need a crowbar to move it. I hope this helps. Let us know how it turns out. I changed my belts a while back and don't remember the exact steps. Try hondatech. They may have a guide for it on there.

You shouldn't have to pry the alternator and then re-tighten. There is normally a tensioner that needs adjustment.

To begin with, how much play does the belt have now? Say find a stretch of at least 12 inches between the pulleys and try to deflect it. How far does it move?

Belt may not always be the cause. Sometimes alternators squeak as well. Perhaps there is an alignment issue with the belt as well.

Older cars usually use a pivoting alternator as a primitive tensioner though. My old 2.5RS was the same way.

I don't know if a '91 Accord would have a serpentine belt or individual belts, but I'm pretty sure tensioners haven't ever been used with individual belts. That's certainly the case with my '80 Buick...

Tensioners have been used with individual belts. One example is my Xterra. After changing 8 alternators on it I would know.

Your Xterra had individual belts? I'm amazed that anything that new would.

My uncle has an Xterra, but I can't remember if his model had an S-Belt or individual ones. But I do know for a fact it has drum brakes :? . He's always complaining about changing them. Anyway, how did the belt adjustment work out.

 When I had to adjust the AIR pump in my Buick, I had to use a hammer to move it in one direction and then a pipe (as a lever and as a hammer extension) to move it in the other. I should have just removed the silly thing.
