help with my mazda 626
i need a 2nd opinion. my timing belt went out. replaced it now the alternator locked and i was told i had to get a new engine. true or not. i just changed out the engine from a '95 w/ 120000miles on it to a '96 with 80000miles back in feb. this sux. its a 2.0 v4 16 valve engine.

The timing belt and alternator are two completely separate systems. The alternator can be replaced without any major expense. I think your mechanic's trying to take you for a ride.

you probably got the 2 events switches around. alternator on a FS is a pain in the ass that nobody wants to deal with, but it doesnt have any effect on the timing belt.
alternator locked up, you changed it.
now the timing belt snapped and it grenaded the engine. FS is an interference engine, if the timing belt goes, valves say hello to the pistons.
either way if the swap cost you more than 1000 dollars, you wasted money. you can get a good 626 with a v6 in it for that much

If you're alternator went out, you don't need to replace the engine.

yeah it is a dohc.. i was told now that its the chassis thats messed up..........
