The '08 .:R32 is out, a '12 TDI In its place

Post by Saabstory02 »

Greetings again all;

Just traded in my old 2008 VW .:R32: http://www.standardshift.com/forum/view ... 32&t=12259

And got a 2012 VW Golf TDI

Image

I'll post more pics up soon, but we've been getting lots of thunder showers so I haven't been able to take many yet...

The Details:
  • 2012 Golf TDI 4 Door, 2.0L Turbo Diesel
  • 6 Speed Manual
  • Sunroof and Navigation Package
  • 17" Salamanca Wheels w/ 225/45/17s
Loved the .:R32 for all 100,000plus miles I put on her in 3 years, but the mileage and fuel economy was killing me... Glad to be back in a Standard Shift worthy vehicle once again...

More to come

Thanks!

I am loving this car more and more; for starters the powerband in it is amazing for its 140HP... The diesel puts out as much torque as the .:R32 had (236 Ft-Lbs) so it's always ready to move when needed. It's no sports car obviously, but in day to day driving it easily holds its own

Not to mention, I missed a manual transmission car... I am loving that I am back in one

Nice! Other than VW's (perceived) reliability issues, I think the Golf/Jetta TDI would be the ultimate road trip car. Space, comfort, MPG, and relatively quick (for what it is) and fun to drive.

I've always wondered about the VW problems I keep hearing about. A friend of mine has a MKV Jetta 2.5 (manual of course). Not sure on the mileage, like 50-60k or so. He drives a ton and drives like a maniac, yet has had no problems with reliability. I guess the problems don't begin until the mileage gets further up there. I do agree on your road trip assessment. I love VW interiors.

/derailment.

Congrats on the car OP. I rode in a MKVI Jetta TDI fairly recently. it was very smooth and felt pretty torquey even in the passenger seat. And that one was an auto, it must be even better with a manual.

Sweet ride. I would rock it!

As for reliability, I get the feeling that VW grew out of that issue by MKV series, if not earlier.

Thanks all!

The reliability issues people generally had were huge problems in the MKIIIs and still bad to some extent in the MKIVs. By the MKVs the issues were largely removed from the line other than a couple "new" issues they created from new tech (cam follower on the 2.0T FSI and DSG troubles).

The MKVI is really not even a "new" model but more of a model refresh on the MKV; and an update that replaced the 2.0T FSI with the 2.0T TSI (removing the cam follower issue and the belt drive for a chain). The DSG problems have been fixed as well now, so they drive really nice at this point.

I've heard of a couple complaints on MKVIs, mainly with "fit and finish" type things (rattles, cabin noise, etc), but so far I never had a problem with my MKV or my MKVI. Here's hoping

This thing really is a blast to drive; very torquey and easy to push when you need to; but smooth as hell for a diesel.

This. Seriously. Maybe by the time we buy another car, the diesels will keep improving fuel economy wise and my wife will be ok with getting one of those instead of a hybrid. It's just hard to turn down 50 mpg...

Nice! EPA fuel economy is one thing, what have you been getting in it so far? In my Sonic I've been able to get around 10 more city mpg than the EPA rating. I bet that diesel will do 50-55 highway .

I know the question wasn't necessarily directed at me... but... in my Fiesta I get a little over EPA estimates, 30-31 in the city (EPA was 28) and highway is 37-38 (EPA is dead on). I rented a 2011 Prius for a trip and got 49.9 mpg combined for 380 miles (probably 300 highway, 80 city) which is dead on considering EPA says 48 highway, 51 city.

I've been averaging about 43 MPG so far; with about 60/40 highway/city driving. Of course; people who have already been driving these for a few years all say not to expect great mileage for the first 10,000 miles or so as the engine needs to break in first

I figure I'll be averaging pretty close to 50 mpg on my commute once it is broken in

The pull is really good; only time I hit any trouble is stopped on a hill... It has a hill hold feature that keeps messing me up on hill starts with the clutch, so I stalled a few times when I first got it... Getting used to the hill hold now so not too much trouble; once you are moving the pull is great for hills or anywhere else, just gotta stay in the meat of the torque band for the hill climbs.

No relation to anyone in Eastern NY, sorry :P

Just wanted to update quickly; so far i am averaging 41 mpg over 10 fill ups now. I've been having a little too much fun with the torque...

did a few minor mods as well, I'll add pics shortly with the changes.
