Re: Projekt Mordecai/MRDRMBL/Das Großer Benz
I did work!
To start with, dad and I wrestled this stupid thing on, took us two days to do it because the oil pump drive cog wasn't lined up, and so it wouldn't push on all the way; to get it engaged, we had to get at the crankshaft pulley, and to get at that, we had to disassemble the entire front of the engine.
While working I happened to notice, "This piece of shit's all rusty!"
That would be from an 800* catalytic converter residing mere inches away from it.
Wrestled this thing out...
...so we could get to this:
The large pulley in the front with four bolts on it is where the fan and clutch reside. I took this as a reference for how to put the new belt on.
A little disassembly later revealed that this idler pulley is actually the source of the rattling from the engine.
And it turns out that both these fan bearings are done for too. One growls when you load the bearing and the other is all crunchy.
Which leaves me with this for the moment
However, it's not all doom and gloom, I got a shiny new badge for the grille
Compared to this crummy old one

I agree with THC. You call that rust? My rust would laugh at that rust and give it a swirly.

It was a joke because the car has no rust anywhere else.94Corolla5Speed wrote:I agree with THC. You call that rust? My rust would laugh at that rust and give it a swirly.

Well I have to admit, I don't have anything other than exhaust that has rotted totally through.

Oh yeah?! Well this is one of my rear suspension shackles.
My frame looks like a graham cracker in a lot of places. That's how rotted it is.

Re: Projekt Mordecai/MRDRMBL/Das Großer Benz
Update: It looks like some f*ckhead used a drill and hammer on the tensioner adjuster bracket to get it off (because he didn't use common sense) when it was replaced a while back. Now I've got to go to the junkyard and get one of those. Until then, my engine looks like this:
Tensioner Adjuster Bracket (That stud should be captive in the plate):
What it should look like:
Fortunately though, while I was having a hissy fit that it was broken, I discovered that the tensioner idler pulley was beginning to make some noise. Time for a new one! (I don't want to take this apart again any time soon)

Re: Projekt Mordecai/MRDRMBL/Das Großer Benz
Since I'm bored, I went through my lists and checked off the stuff I've done. I'm quite proud, this was a lot of work.
Reassemble tensioner
Install tensioner pulley
Route and tension serpentine belt
Install fan clutch and cooling fan
Install radiator and new hoses
Fill and purge cooling system
Tighten down starter
Install driveshaft
Install catcon heat shield
Re-assemble/weld exhaust system
Get new fuel distributor adjusted so the engine will start.
Then:
Paint new body panels
Paint entire car-Probably going to go to town with 3-5 coats of laquer aiming for a really deep gloss. You know, the one that blinds you if you look at it at the wrong angle.
Replace boned driver door window regulator
Repair rear driver window regulator.
Get rear windows re-tinted (Maybe fronts to the legal 35%)
Looks like I'm right on schedule for that May guesstimation I made way back when.

Replace transmission shifter cable No Longer Relevant
Replace transmission fluid filter and flush transmission No Longer Relevant
Take off the old tires, repaint the rims, and put brand new Goodyears on them Check
Paint new body panels and put them on
Sand off and spray on new clearcoat
(Probably) Replace brake rotors if they turn out to be warped (little bit of a shudder in the steering wheel when lightly braking) No Longer Relevant (They're fine)
Have junkyard rocker cover powdercoated black and replace gasket Check
Get front seats and steering wheel recovered (ow...my wallet) Check
Go to town on the dirty as f*ck carpeting with a rug doctor. Check (That was scary, the water was 100% pitch black.)
However, I now have ANOTHER list.1974Alfa5spd wrote:Things left to do:

Kill the CEL once and for all. Check

Re: Projekt Mordecai/MRDRMBL/Das Großer Benz
Another update, since I procured a new(ish) rear exhaust section at the junkyard, I had no need for my old one, and as soon as I cut the hangers, I discovered the source of the exhaust leak that's plagued me from day 1. A little patch of rust on the muffler, which as soon as I prodded it with a screwdriver, turned into a dime-sized hole. Also, about two inches to the right of it was a huge crummy weld. Looks like it's had some exhaust work done. Anyway, it's going to get a rear section with only 190,000 on it instead of 300,000, and I wont give myself or my date CO poisoning. Win/win scenario.
