Projekt Mordecai/MRDRMBL/Das Großer Benz
So, we bought the car, time to make the thread. It's a 1990 Mercedes-Benz 300SE with a 3L straight-6 motor, a (rebuilt) 4-speed auto, and 276,000 miles on the odometer. The interior's ratty, smells like smoke, and the damn engine wont start. Not too bad for $700, if I do say so myself. And the best part is, it's mine! Mom wont touch it with a 29 1/2 foot pole. The air I got from her is "if it breaks down, it's gonna break down on your ass!" Dad and I are going to pick it up next Saturday.
1st, the good: This thing's got power everything, and it all works! Power windows, power sunroof, power mirrors, and power memory seats (with power adjusting headrests ). Tilt and telescoping steering wheel, driver airbag, and vacuum-actuated central locking.
2nd, the bad: It doesn't start (I think the fuel pump relay may be kaput), and it's got bad compression on a couple of cylinders and decent on the rest. The bads are 80psi and the rest are 140psi, nominal compression is 175psi. The paint shows its age. It's pretty faded and the driver side C-pillar is completely missing the clear coat. What I think I'm going to do with the paint is sand it down and put on a new clear coat. For the motor, I've got a perfect running one in Mendocino lined up for $320. A couple weekends of works, and it'll drive!
3rd, the name: It's got three names because they all describe the car so well. Mordecai, mainly because at first glance it reminded me of this guy. MRDRMBL is short for "murdermobile" because it looks like a total mafia car, and it's got the trunk space to hold at least four dead bodies! And finally Das Großer Benz because it is exactly what that translates to, "The Big Benz." It's 17' long.
4th, the pics: I unfortunately didn't take any pictures when we went to check the car out, so all I've got is the pictures from the listing.

We need to change your name from alfachild to HitlerYouth.
On a serious note, great looking car! I hope you don't end up paying the Mercedes tax for repairs.

Re: Projekt Mordecai/MRDRMBL/Das Großer Benz
Welcome to boat ownership! At 17' it's not even a foot and half shorter than my boat, which puts it at about ten times the size of an Alfa. If it's only a four-body trunk then it must have a LOT of back seat room even with the front seats moved way back. Nice.
When I read "vacuum-actuated central locking" I was like "AWD with a locking center differential?" and then I realized....why the hell do the doors have vacuum-actuated locks instead of electric? By 1990, wiring and electric lock technology was pretty mature.

No clue, Mercedes must have an affinity with stuff that sucks. *buh dum tss*theholycow wrote:When I read "vacuum-actuated central locking" I was like "AWD with a locking center differential?" and then I realized....why the hell do the doors have vacuum-actuated locks instead of electric? Not for $700 and with a rebuilt transmission, steering box, radiator, power steering pump, new catalytic converters, and fuel pump and filter.ElectroGhandi wrote:Aww, come on, man! You should have gotten a 300SD Turbodiesel!
Besides, the OM617.951 only makes 125HP and 170lb-ft. The M103 straight-six makes 177HP and close to 200lb-ft. And, straight-sixes are just better.

. One can dream. But yeah, car looks nice. I've always liked the older MBs personally. Not loud like their newer designs. They totally scream douchebag .

Put some big ball bearings in a metal can and wire it to the engine so it sounds like a diesel!
