From what I understand, there's a bushing in each of the rear hubs that is designed to deform a certain way during turns to add toe to the rear wheels, thus using the rear wheels to 'steer'. I've heard that when functioning correctly the system is kind of unpredictable, and when the bushings are old and torn up (as most are by now) it gets worse. It's a pretty common mod to replace the specialized bushings with conventional ones.
