Smart Phone Holders

Post by zenfiz6 » Tue Oct 08, 2013 12:23 am

Ok, so, now that I've had some time to play with the new wheels (which I hope to get back tomorrow from Audi), I'm thinking about where to mount my smart phone and with what gadget.

I've decided the safest place to mount it is probably at the lowest point on the windshield at far left. I'm not enamored of any other spot either because it restricts visibility or because I'd lose access to something.

I'm thinking of one of those long-reach suction-cup windshield mounts so that the Waze map will be pretty visible (yes, yes, I know I have navigation, Shadow, but without Sirius, I don't get traffic).

Any other recommendations for location? Any recommendations for suction cup gizmos? I figure I need about 8" (20 cm) of reach from the windshield to the edge of the dashboard at that height.

I see that nobody mounts their smartphones in their car. :P

But I was looking at This mount from RAM (www.rammount.com). Has anyone tried it?

I have a mount with a semi-sticky base, significantly more sticky than a Post-It note but still removable, that I sometimes use. I've been planning to make a mount that connects securely to the dash using existing screws...I've got all the parts, I just need to do a little ghetto-fabrication and some assembly.

I like center above the stereo/HVAC. If it hangs low it can block the HVAC controls, no problem. In my car it won't block the vents. If I raise it above the dash it's really only going to block my view of the hood, not the road. In the center I can use my right hand to fiddle with it (whether that's adjusting the mount or doing stuff on the device) and it's no further away from looking at the road than the position you describe.

That RAM mount sure looks like a nice one.

I have used one and my dad uses one very similar to that RAM Mount. Attaches either to the dash or to an air vent and you set the phone in, then squeeze the sides in and they hold it in place. It worked well when I used it in the past, though I only used it because I had an hour long commute (one way) at the time so I could mess with music/phone/etc and see who was calling without having to grab the phone.

I'll have to try out the RAM unit and see how it goes.

I might need an extra link, though. The longest link they have is a 6" and I need at least 8".

My phone stays in my pocket. Nobody calls me, and my audio is from the ipod that I leave hooked up in the car.

Ditto that. No one calls me either. I use my phone for text messaging and data primarily.

My car has BlueTooth, so any call I would get would be passed to the car, and any music I want to play from my phone also gets passed to the car... although control of that music is still on the phone.

So, really, all I need is access to the Waze map while I'm driving.

You should stop paying a bill for a while. You'll get some phone calls. :-)

What gets me is that my Mom is now hooked on texting. Someone in their 60's should not be texting as their preferred method of communicating! Worse yet, she uses "text-speak"!

I got a text one day that looked like:
My Mom, the English Major wrote:R U n GF coming 2 visit?
Oh my god. I could rip my hair out.

And now, you may commence with the "yo momma" jokes. :P

I was fine with this until you include "the English Major" part. Now I want to rip my hair out too. Why can't people just type the whole word?? It doesn't take much longer to do at all. Seriously. Do it. That way I won't guess that "IIRC" is a typo of "IRC" and think people still use that. *looks pointedly at Cow, bk, and mtheis* 8)

My dad, same age group, does some texting too. I'm happy with it...it's convenient for me. He also uses txtspk but he has a good excuse. His phone is a flip phone, no qwerty, and he's even horrifically slow on a full-size computer qwerty anyway. I can't imagine how long it takes him to type up something like "R U n GF coming 2 visit?".

Yes, we do tend to use "IIRC" while chatting in IRC, don't we. 8)

If I recall correctly, it takes a very special context in order for you to mistaken IIRC with IRC.
