This was my argument. Saab brought turbocharging to the masses in an affordable and reliable(ish) way. Starting with the 1999 model year, every real US market Saab (not badge engineered Imprezas and Trailblazers) came with a turbo. Though more expensive than say a VW GTI of the era, the 900 SPG was one of the earlier hot hatches, and the Viggen continued that tradition.

Former Saab owner Spyker declared bankrupt

"As far as I am concerned this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning,” Muller said in the statement, quoting British prime minister Winston Churchill's 1942 speech after the country won a key battle against Germany in the Second World War.

"I will relentlessly endeavor to resurrect Spyker as soon as practically possible and, assuming we will be successful, pursue our goal to merge with a high performance electric aircraft manufacturer and develop revolutionary electric Spykers with disruptive sustainable technology," Muller said.

Is Saab defunct? Not at this dealership
Store aims to serve orphaned customers with parts, service, cars
Image

Nearly all Saab dealers reached a dead end after the Swedish brand's bankruptcy in 2011. But not Park Ave Saab in Maywood, N.J.

The dealership, about 10 miles from Manhattan, (Is that anywhere near Trollhättan?) bought the customer lists of several defunct Saab dealerships in the New York City area.

Then it moved into a closed Suzuki store and started courting Saab drivers in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. With ads, service coupons and emails, it offers readily available parts, service and a selection of low-mileage used Saabs.

Park Ave's website is a portal for all things Saab, such as the latest news and rumors from Sweden, updates on parts and alerts when a used Saab is for sale.

"The Saab customer is very interesting," Morrissey said. "They are very emotional about Saab, and it amazes me the loyalty customers have to that brand. They'd rather pay top dollar for a used 2011 than buy a new 2014 Volvo."

Close is a relative term, like "Close the door, you mother-in-law is headin' up the walkway".

Saab rally pioneer Erik Carlsson dies at 86
Image

Known as one of the more colorful racers of his era, Carlsson was known to come up with unique ways to stay ahead of the competion -- and at least one step ahead of the competion.

Case in point, as detailed on his Wikipedia page, during one rally in the U.K., Carlsson needed a spare part during a rally and happened to find a brand new Saab 96 on a parking lot along the route. He and the mechanic quickly started disassembling the car when the rather upset owner discovered them. Carlsson's rally co-driver managed to defuse the situation by explaining that Carlsson was a factory driver for Saab and the owner would be given a new car. In the end, Carlsson kept on driving and he and the car owner remained friends and exchanged Christmas cards for years after the chance meeting.

Carlsson was married to Pat Moss, a rally driver in her own right and younger sister of legendary racer Sir Stirling Moss. She died in 2008.

(Single Standard Shifters Take Note: Marry into a racing family and your spouse will likely support your career/hobby/addiction. This advice carries into other areas besides racing.)

I remember way back when hearing of this crazy guy who dragged the brakes as he applied throttle, but it sure worked for him.

NEVS claims 5 new Saab vehicles coming by 2018

Image

Saab: Remember them? Maker of quirky little Swedish cars with peppy turbo engines? Well, they’re back(ish), with help from parent company National Electric Vehicle Sweden. NEVS president Mattias Bergman said during Stora Bildagen, Sweden’s largest annual automotive conference, that a heavily upgraded version of the 9-3 will hit Chinese and Swedish markets in the first half of 2017, followed by four brand-new models in 2018 -- saabblog.net was there and says the company is reinventing itself to become “a supplier of sustainable mobility solutions.”

"Stop your SAABing"

Saab AB, the Swedish aerospace company that owns the Saab brand, will not allow its name or logo to be used on future models produced by National Electric Vehicle Sweden (NEVS).

NEVS, which bought the assets of bankrupt Saab Automobile in 2012, has announced two big deals in the past few weeks to supply electric Saab 9-3-based sedans to two separate Chinese companies as part of China's push to make EVs a mass-market alternative to gasoline cars.
