Who woulda thunkit? Shirley, not Ralph Nader. Didn't he write the book "Unsafe in any Stream"?

Re: Secret SUV
The video is actually quite impressive. I wonder how many times they high-centered it and got it stuck in mud to get that footage?

Yanno, I was thinkin'...scary, right? VW Bittles were known as go-in-the-snow cars. Good portion of the mass was over the drive wheels, smooth underbody with no exhaust systems, driveshafts, transmission crossmembers hanging down below to catch on snow or ground.
Mebbe the Corvair was similar, given the similarities of the design layouts.

Re: Secret SUV
The problem with the early Corvairs were their swing axle suspension that tended to cause the rear wheel to be tucked in on hard cornering. Same was true on older Porsche and VW cars. I was told by a person who drove the earlier Porsches that the key was not to let up on the gas during hard cornering. There was a company back in the 60's called EMPI that made a camber compensator to help solve the wheel camber problem. By 1967 before VW went with independant rear suspension, they used something called a Z bar to help solve the rear wheel camber problem. My old 67 VW did ok, but it still got blown all over the road on a windy day.

Weird, but this is like the third time in less than a week that I have heard of people using VW Beetles offroad..
I would have never considered that. Ever.
