Re: Quick ride-along in my GTO
nice video - i like the view of the shifter and gauges (and dash etc) but if it were possible, seeing the road too would help me know what's going on overall. i miss having an engine that doesn't sound like a tractor at lower revs. when i took video in the maxima, i had my camera mounted to the front of the passenger headrest with rubber bands. hard to aim it to the left like you did this way, but i could get it to aim a decent amount to one side or the other depending on where i had it mounted on the headrest.
p.s. what's your left hand doing between 1:28 and 1:46

Hondas are never supposed to see low revs.

Always gotta keep one hand on the shifter and the other on the gear stick.potownrob wrote:p.s. what's your left hand doing between 1:28 and 1:46
Or there's some crotch warming going on.....I don't know. I have heated seats for that.
Nice vid of what's going on, although I expected the throws to be shorter......maybe they're shorter than they appear in the video.
Two pedals, two feet, too easy.

The throws are long, you are absolutely right about that. It's something I have had to adjust to. Ultimately, I don't believe it affects my shifting speed much at all. I get into my integra and the throws feel as short as a video game joystick compared to the goat.

Assuming its the same, I've never found the throw too long either. Can easily move the shifter to the next gear faster than the revs fall off.

By that standard, the Rabbit could have a 50 meter throw.beowulf80 wrote:Can easily move the shifter to the next gear faster than the revs fall off.

4th to 5th is so close that I often go 4-6 instead. Otherwise the revs do fall below 5th unless I rip into it, which I don't normally do when driving casually.beowulf80 wrote:Assuming its the same, I've never found the throw too long either. 4th-5th is the only shift I can get smoothly in my Acura. Everything before it I always clutch-out too early. The revs take forever to fall, it seems like the flywheel weighs a ton. It's not rev-hang either, there's no DBW.

Re: Quick ride-along in my GTO
In the Rabbit the revs would fall fairly slow, especially compared to the goat, and I remember I'd just drag the RPMs down with the clutch when shifting.

Re: Quick ride-along in my GTO
LOL, you'd need some long arms for that one.By that standard, the Rabbit could have a 50 meter throw.
I wasn't thinking about that, but yes same for me. 4-5 is only 200-300 rpm apart at 50ish mph. Everything else is closer to 800-1000 rpm under light acceleration.4th to 5th is so close that I often go 4-6 instead. Otherwise the revs do fall below 5th unless I rip into it, which I don't normally do when driving casually.
I rarely actually use 5th gear, generally only when I'm in 4th at 2000 rpm ~48mph and don't want to take the engine all the way down to 1000 rpm because I'm in a situation where I think I might have to accelerate. The Camaro will accelerate in 6th at 1000 rpm, but its doggy.
When doing the 4-6 shift I do find I have to wait for the revs to match. I usually just start the shifter into the gear very lightly pressing on the syncro until I feel it fall in. Afterwards I have to de-clutch a little quicker for everything to sync up just right.

Re: Quick ride-along in my GTO
Yes, all you've said is much like in the goat. Same RPM difference between 4th and 5th and I drive much the same way. Only difference is that I use 6th as low as 40 mph, which puts the revs around 950. If I need to accelerate lightly, doing so in 6th is fine. Sure, it's not fast by all means but is appropriate in many situations. Otherwise I just downshift out of 6th if I need some ooomph.

Re: Quick ride-along in my GTO
Now I'm really interested in driving the Camaro SS and seeing what similarities and differences there are in overall car's handling, drivability and power. I suspect that power is very similar and will not be noticed much via a butt dyno, bit I'd like to check out handling and composure of the car.

Re: Quick ride-along in my GTO
Given our proximity we should organize a meeting sometime. I've also wondered about the similarities of the GTO.
