- you will have major holster wear on the gun, mostly from where the gun's finish rubs on the kydex side of the holster. The leather side of the holster will also wear the finish off the corners of the slide, but at a lesser rate. This, of course, doesn't affect the performance of the weapon, but some people are more bothered by such wear than others. Kydex wear will be very fast and severe at first, but will slow down and stop progressing eventually, when the contact points have worn in.

An opinion you didn't ask for: you'll likely change your opinion on manual safety once you carry for a while. I used to carry with the safety on, but as I got more comfortable, I realized that if things ever came to that, I'd never remember to take it off, so I carry with a round chambered and safety off, always following the cardinal rules of handling firearms. Having said all of that, it's good to have a choice in how to carry, which is why I liked the idea of the manual safety on the Shield, because while I knew I wanted to keep the safety on at first, I always knew I didn't have to. Now, I don't need it and would be just fine with a Glock for that reason.
I was initially bothered by the thought of the finish wearing off from holster usage. I now know that it's pretty much inevitable to some degree no matter the holster, especially with kydex. I ran a box of Blazer Brass through my Shield at the new indoor range in town and I was more accurate than I was expecting, considering the width of the Shield's grip (the last time I shot a pistol was with your PPX). My hope is that I'll eventually be comfortable enough to carry without the safety and look into getting a Glock 26. For now, I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

Those kids are only inches away from sudden death and you say "Sure, don't use the safety - what could go wrong?"

Tony, have you ever had failure to feed issues with hollow points in your Shield? When chambering the first round from a full magazine, it nosedives and gets caught on the bottom of the feed ramp. It works flawlessly after dropping the mag and removing the first round. I didn't see anything visually wrong with the feed ramp afterwards when I cleaned it.

These are Federal HST 147 grain and I'm not riding the slide.

Lol Rob, I was totally expecting that response.

I picked up some Hornady Critical Defense at Academy today and haven't had the problem. Looks like I found my new defense ammo!

Second that, I too have Hornady Critical Defense in all calibers I own as home-defense ammo at the ready. :)

Hey, sorry as I missed the post earlier.

Truthfully, this is the reason I never have the mag fully loaded. I always carry with one in the chamber and the mag at capacity -1.

I have never had a single malfunction or stoppage, but it could be due to my above-mentioned practice.

As for carry ammo, I'm a huge fan of Speer Gold Dots, 115 grain. No particular reason to not like the other brands, as I've not had any bad experiences with any quality defense ammo.

On another note, I'm getting close to picking up a Ruger GP 100. Going to be my first wheel gun, and I'm pretty excited about it.

I took my CHL (LTC?) class on Sunday and it was pretty cold outside (for Texas). Had fingerprints done today and now the wait begins!

A friend of mine just submitted his, too. They are saying no more than 6 weeks, I believe.

Very nice. That's about how long it took for me a couple years back.
