Incidentally, the mileage overall in mixed driving is 20.5 mpg, which I find ironic-- it's identical to my old car, a 530i with steptronic, even with 50% more horsepower.

You can get better mileage with manuals, thats why hypermilers use em :)

Its always cool to see incredibly powerful cars that still get good mileage. Single digit fuel economy doesnt make a car better.

Unless it's under 10 I don't really care :). I just took note because it was interesting that it's relatively efficient. After a spirited weekend drive for a couple of hours today through really hilly terrain, it's down to 19.4 which is slightly worse than the old car but still good for the performance.

Welcome:)

Nice Ride! Congrats:)

I wish I'll have something similar at some point in the future.

As for hills, don't bmws have hill-assists just like new subies?

It's a great feature when u are learning and minimizes the risk of rolling, but doesn't teach you how to do proper hill starts.

The best method is handbrake I think. Less prone to error and less chance to burn the clutch in a panic when you are learning)
Heel and toe start is very complicated for a beginner - don't try that or you might fry your clutch).

Learn the handbrake furst)

Gluck)

AHTOXA wrote:Honestly, I did a dumb thing in my new car once. I was really tired coming home from work and as I was accelerating I went from 4-3 instead of 4-5. Dumb move. I wasn't accelerating hard at the time so it was not a money shift, but it startled me for sure. Even after you drive for a while, you still need to pay attention.
I just did that the other day when I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing, and I've been shifting just about everyday since August of 2003  .
Driving a stick is a great way to drive safer, because it forces you to stay awake (unless on highway, really) and more alert to your surroundings and to what your car's doing.

Dear AHTOXA,

Three years and 63k miles later, I think I have it mastered :)

Thanks for the offer but I think I'm going to hang on to this one ;)
