I'm amazed you went with "topic" instead of "god".

Just joined the forum today. Good to see that there are others out there who love manuals as much as I do. In september I purchased my first brand new car, a 2010 honda accord ex with an automatic transmission. after driving it for 3 months i was miserable. it was a great car in every respect...looked great, smooth ride, excellent gas mileage, reasonably priced, high resale value, low-maintenance, comfortable ride. but it was boring. really, really f**k boring. So, I traded it in december 2010 with only 3000 miles on it, took a hit on the trade in but got a 2010 subaru legacy 2.5i premium in a manual transmission. i came upon it by accident really. it was the only leftover 2010 on the lot that they couldn't sell specifically because it's a manual transmission. I live in new jersey, and yes, jersey traffic does make a manual a little bit of a pain in the ass sometimes. even so, I love my car, I love my manual transmission and I have made it known to my friends and family that I will NEVER AGAIN drive an automatic!!!

I've been told that auto manufacturers are looking to discontinue production of manuals not only due to poor sales but because some manuals, even in brand new cars, cannot pass the newer emission standards in california. has anyone heard anything about this?

Also, with the newer continuous variable transmissions (as in the subaru legacy), the manual gets FAR POORER gas mileage which is a little counter-intuitive.

Even so, automatics suck. Manuals connect you to the car, you are more engaged in your environment, and there's nothing like the feel of a heel-toe revmatch downshift while cornering on a back-country road. LONG LIVE THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION!!!!

There's always talk of the imminent extinction of manuals but in the end we will have them as long as we have internal combustion reciprocating piston engines driving our wheels. The selection may wax and wane but the market will always be large enough for at least a few models.

The Cali emissions thing is one I haven't heard. I'd be curious to see how that works. Probably just a matter of highway emissions with modern too-short gear ratios...perhaps easily fixed with a real highway gear.

As for fuel economy with a manual it's all about the driver. The driver can adjust how he drives to save fuel if he wants. That can be done most effectively with a manual. EPA fuel economy tests cannot; they have a specific pattern they must stick to.

Frankly, with the quality and frugality of automatics these days, driving a manual trans is not so much about gas mileage. To me, it's about the experience and personal engagement. Ironically driving a manual has become an automated experience for me, but not so much that it deprives me of the experience.
