my new member intro...

Post by cimbali »

Hi!!

Finally posting in the new member section after being a long time lurker!

This site has been enormously helpful with regards to trying to learn the intricacies of using a manual trans after driving an auto for almost 20 years.

I really appreciate the helpful replies in the tips section of the forum which is where I spend most of my time.

I almost have 5,000 miles of manual transmission experience on my new 328i. In the early days, I was so focused on clutch modulation but soon realized hand placement while shifting was equally important...and that’s was after a near misshift.

Overall, things are going very well...but I am still slow with my launches, bumpy with my upshifts and shaky with my hill starts... but I hope with more time behind the wheel I'd be able to look back and chuckle as I enjoy my 100 mile daily commute in my standard shift car!

Welcome.

Just enjoy your rough upshifts. It feels nicer than a too-smooth automatic...until your passenger complains.

Welcome! 5k miles is still being a beginner - at least that's how it was for me. I've also been a bit bumpy during the shifts at that time as well.

Personally, about a year worth of driving or around 15-20k miles are needed to feel totally at home and never think about it again. Rougher shifts and bumpier starts will still happen once in a great while, but it's not something you will pay attention to. I think that's roughly the point where it truly becomes second nature to drive a manual.

You've been on this site for four years. When did you get your manual vehicle?

i tried to upload a photo of my ride but couldnt...I get a message that says "board attachment quota has been reached." I'll try later.
Use another site to host your photos. Photobucket.com is popular, but if you don't want to have to create an account tinypic.com is quick and easy. Aww-kittah-aww.com allows obscene pictures that aren't allowed on this forum, in case you want to post stuff like that at other forums.
