Another Generic n00b thread

Hello to all! Here comes another generic newbie intro!

20/m/Los Angeles California. I've been driving for a bit over 2 years, My first and still: 1997 Honda Prelude Automatic (has "sport shift" mode, similar to "tiptronic" but really an electronically driver operated automatic transmission for those of you who've never heard). Thing about these cars are, they are very well known for their failing automatic transmissions... Mine is starting to go soooo manual here i come! By the way, this will be a conversion to a manual (you can actually find my how to here: http://www.preludepower.com/forums/show ... p?t=302157 lol )

Anyways, i'll be chiming in here quite a bit I suppose, I'll search before making new threads (if any). I havent really got any manuals to borrow to practice on... Or anyone to have me teach, but I dont mind learning on my own. The use of the "sport shift" mode on the Prelude has really got me to understand RPM's, Gears, shifting, and getting a feel of how the car reacts based on the rpm and gear. I've Been reading what I've found (alot from this site) on the minute details of what NOT to do and such.

Quickie question, any of you have bad experiences learning on a brand new clutch/ manual car? Its gonna be my only way to do it, I dont mind but i'd be reassuring to know! I dont expect to be top notch from day one, but any thoughts?

shot man. basically you will suck for a little while. its the fact. but aslong as you get clutch control down and the handbrake you need not fear anything good luck.

hills may seem scary at first but the more you practice on them the better overcome your weaknesses and u'll be a competent manual driver.

I have experience learning on a brand new clutch. I had almost no experience when in early 2008 I went to the VW dealer looking for the manual car I now have, lied and said I had more experience and just hadn't driven manual in a while, did fine on the test drive, and took the car home (after which I proceeded to kinda suck for what felt like forever).

Here's a couple things I think might have been different for me learning on a brand new one instead of the usual well-worn car:
- Clutch smell...new clutches and new cars make smells and it's hard to tell if the smell is appropriate just for the new car or if it's your fault.
- The clutch break-in makes getting a feel for that clutch into a moving target.

For you, there will also be the concern that you've made an installation mistake or gotten a faulty part.

I admire what you're doing, it's quite the plunge and you've got some balls to do it quite the way you're doing it.

^ Well all auto->manual swaps will be about the same. wiring will prolly be the annoying part lol. its the pain in the ass last part to splice up b4 you can drive it.
