New Member about to buy a stick shift
Hi everyone I'm new and a freshman in college. I will be going to look at new 09' and 08' honda civic's today and plan on purchasing one with a stick shift. I've driven a few stick shifts before but am not have extremely basic shifting skills and really am not that great. The two cars I've driven are a 90 Saab 900 turbo and a 99 Mustang GT. The Saabs clutch seemed pretty broken in when i drove it and would slip pretty easily the mustang had a very heavy grabby clutch with a pretty definite friction point (which actually seemed to make it easier for me). I'm probably going to test drive a civic this week I'm kind of nervous since I haven't driven a stick in a long time. What is the civic like as far as the clutch and shifting goes?

welcome to here
i haven't driven the civic, but once you get the basics for shifting down, its not that hard to get into another car and drive, you should be alright.
in a few minutes someone that owns a civic or has driven one should post

New Civics have a similar clutch to mine. It's a very soft, very forgiving clutch. However a new clutch in a brand new car is a little grabbier until it breaks in a bit. This is somewhat subjective but I believe I noticed this when I bought mine.

Re: New Member about to buy a stick shift
Basic rule of thumb for driving any unfamiliar stick shift car is to keep the revs up and release the clutch slowly. As you get to know what the vehicle give you in terms of power and timing, you can lower your revs and speed up your release.
Compared to the cars you have driven, I would expect the Civic to have less power and a more forgiving clutch, so keeping the revs up will probably be the main thing you need to do when you first drive it.

Re: New Member about to buy a stick shift
civic = honda = rev happy
basically hondas lack torque down low, so dont be afraid to rev it a bit to make power they are made for that. Should be a reasonably easy car to drive smooth once you got some miles down in it.

Well I ended up getting the car just a few hours ago. So I should be on my way to become a more experienced manual driver soon.

Looks just like one a friend of mine test drove a few days ago, only it was automatic. Sounded good, but it was so slow.
