This was the original Dakota that they decided the Ram shouldn't be a 3/2-sized big brother to.

There was going to be an SUV based on the Dakota....until Chrysler bought Jeep and didn't want to compete with the Cherokee or the soon-to-come Grand Cherokee.

The Ram of the day didn't miss being a 3/2-scale "that" by too much.

...And when you say Dakota-based SUV, you're talking about something more akin to a "Ramcharger 50" that would have slotted against the Bronco II, not something like what ultimately became the Durango?

No, the Dakota was much bigger than the little pick-m-up from Mitsubitty that Dodge was offering. The original SUV based on the Dakota that was worked on in the late '80s never made it past the first prototypes before it got cancelled. The Durango didn't come out until mebbe 10 years later.

Oh, and the Cherokee was sposta go away when the new model came out, but instead, they took the new model upscale and called it the Grand Cherokee and kept the Cherokee concentrated at the more affordable side of the market.
