adding tranny fluid
How do you add fluid through the shifter? I know you need to remove some clip I'm assuming? and how/what tools do you need to do so?

I used to think the tranny was right under the shifter too, but the only thing that runs under the shifter is the exhaust pipe and, on your 300, the driveshaft that runs back from the tranny. The shifter is a few feet behind the tranny and the two are connected by a long rod in our Nissans (I have a Maxima which probably has a longer rod since it's fwd but i haven't looked at the 300zx layout in like forever). Anyway, manual trannies need to be filled from under the car on the side of the tranny. There's a big (like inch or inch and a half wide) screw that you will probably have a hell of a time getting out. You will need a bigass breaker bar (not the little footlong bar) and the square end of that hooks into the filler screw. When you add gear oil (I think yours calls for GL4; don't even think of putting in GL5 unless the manual calls for it, and don't listen to the nissan techs or any mechanics- lots of ruined trannies from using the newer gl5 in older nissan trannies. gl4 is harder to find but if your tranny calls for it, which i think it does, that's what you need to get and i know where you can find it), get some in the threads so that it won't be so hard to get the bolt out next time. The drain bolt is also along one of the sides of the tranny, but it's smaller and should be closer to the bottom. Mine was right near some bar so i needed a special wrench to get at it without stripping that bolt. Lemme know if you have any questions. I got my gear oil at amsoil.com (amsoil's arguably the best gear oil out there- don't mix it with regular dino gear oil though... only get it if you're gonna replace all the oil- 4 quarts should do it, 5 for good measure).
