Isn't the 2.slow roughly 30 years old?

from what i've heard and read, the current generation 2.slow jetta is legitimately underpowered 8)
Those Jettas with the 2.oh so slow are horrendous. First time I drove one I put my foot to the floor and thought something was wrong with it. Other than that, I can't think of too many cars that aren't capable of moving themselves at a less than acceptable rate (electric cars and Smart cars aside).
Two pedals, two feet, too easy.

I drove a modern 2.slow Jetta. It is slow, very slow, but it can safely get out of its way abs merge onto an 80 mph highway.

That meets the specified benchmark.

sounds excessive to me; you shouldn't have to rattle the car apart just to keep up with traffic.

You don't. You only need to do that in a severe, unexpected, life-or-death situation. Normal driving requires much less power than the specified benchmark.

Some of you guys don't know what a slow car actually feels like. A car that can't get up to speed safely no matter how hard you flog it.

Would an 88hp Escort suffice, or are we taking Beetle Van slow?

yeah, i'm surprised this car hasn't been recalled, it's so slow. it would do okay in the 1950s, but not now.

those were sold and driven while most other cars on the road weren't much quicker.

edit: i'd compare the 2.slow in its modern day (big and heavy) jetta body to the late 90s escorts.

You have to keep up with the cars around you, not bygone cars from an earlier generation. So, I would say a car is "slow" or "fast" in relation to other contemporary vehicles. From that standpoint, any car that is on the wrong side of the [modern] bell curve is slow.

The 2.0 Jetta? No, man. I've driven one with 2 people in it. It's NOT THAT slow. It's certainly NOT unsafe in regards to acceleration.
